I'm getting an error about memory and I'm guessing this is due to Windows 98 having a memory limit... am I right?

Dosent like anything about 512mb. I think it should simply only see 512, but apparently if theres more installed it can cause problems anyways.

Run a google on the problem. There's a setting in an INI somewhere to set. I have a GB on the game PC, dual-booting with Win98se, and had to do that (run a Google) when I added the second 512 MBs.

you need to change the Vcache settings to limit the amount of Vcache to 512mb, windows 98 will then be able to function correctly with more than 512mb, however only the first 512mb will be cached.

search microsofts website, they have an article on how to change the Vcache settings, it's been a year and a half since I last installed Win98SE on my P4 which runs 1.5gb DDR400.

Nocturnal you're installing this into a system with 2GB of DDR400, why on earth do you want to even mess with Windows98?

What's wrong with running Win2k or XP Pro?

I can't believe people still mess with that OS, sheessh :(

Perhaps it's because it's the only legal Microsoft OS license he has available to him. I'd much rather be running Win98 legally than some other Microsoft OS not so legally. ;)

You do have a point. ;) BUT an OEM version of XP can be had for around $70

True enough. But *if* Nocturnal's client is like many of us, he's somewhat limited financially, and that $70 oem XP is still some time away.

And while DOSBOX has been quite helpful in allowing us to run legacy applications on 2K/XP machines, it's unfortunately not a panacea. I have a few systems running Win98 because I need the DOS mode for some radio-astronomy work I'm doing over serial ports. :Q Yeah, serial ports. :p

Praise your client for sticking to his guns and not being a sheep by following everyone else to XP. :)

Okay, this is 2 Win9x threads in 2 days without a post by Link19. Is he banned or something? I'm getting worried. ;) :p

He's probably copped a warning from the mods, but it is nice not to have legit threads ruined.

a little on topic here..

What are some of the most extreme hardware that anyone has ever installed Windows 98 on?

Extreme, meaning new, or latest hardware? Anyone get PCI Express working? etc... etc..

I don't think I've installed Win98 since Win2000 came out. I guess that would mean 1999 or so? Wow, Win98 is old and thinking about so am I now! :p

I've been helping to clean out my friend Will's house for his wife; Will died back in July and was something of a packrat. I've already found a couple copies of Dos 6.22 and WFW 3.11 still in the original shrinkwrap! :p

And don't worry Robor - you may be getting old but you're a DC friend for life! :D

DasFox has been very polite and open to other views. He also strikes me as someone with a bit more knowledge and experience than.. some other(s). :)
