Windows 98 File system

I know that there are IFS for windows XP that are linux based (IE ext2/3 can be installed for windows xp, but not booted from) I have a computer that im building for a family member, and for reasons of cheapness they don't want to get windows XP. Anyways, is there a way make windows 98 use a diffrent File system then Fat32? They have a 80gb HD with there computer and it would be a shame to have to split the drive into 3 partitions as I know that there would be a phonecall in the future complaining about not having enough memory in their computer.

Also, If you cant make it bootable would it be possible to make it a primary saving location and make a small Fat32 FS that contains just the OS.

Anyways, the other thing ive been tempted to do is install a version of linux on there computer, but that is something that I don't think they would like (as they could not install everything they wanted). Thanks for the help.

Why don't you want to use FAT32? Windows 98 can use FAT16 and FAT32 only, AFAIK.

How much are you spending on the computer? XP should be included in the cost of building any new computer (unless Linux or BSD is an option). Depending on your budget, you might as well buy them a Dell and save yourself the hassle of supporting the system.

Win 98 does have a 32Gb partition limit but, 'Partition Magic' may be able to help you out. Just create a logical file structure for them and they should be good.

I wanted to go out of Fat32 because it is old and it was not supposed to support filesystems over 32gb. However, upon installing win98 I found that it did not (apperently) install multiple partitions and is filling the full 80 gigs. So Ill live with it (or my family will at least)

If you're building a PC with relatively new hardware, you're setting yourself up for failure by installing Windows 9x.

That is untrue. FAT32 is up to 2TB. The limitation is that you can't format partitions bigger than 32GB in FAT32 while using windows 2000/XP. windows 98 can format theses big partitions with no problem. That limitation in win 2000/XP was created to make people use NTFS.

Yes, it worked just fine for me as well so Im happy over all. The hardware all worked and most everything is supported (it is far for top of the line, more like newer then what they had but 2-4 years old)

Did you put a firewall and antivirus on it? Did you get all the patches from Windows Update? If so, then I see nothing wrong with how you've set them up.
