Windows 98 does not detect my printer when using the usb port but it does manage with the parallel cable. The printer is an hp deskjet 840c with AMD T-bird, ABIT KT7-RAID motherboard. I did load the latest via 4 in 1 drivers, but is there something else I'm forgetting? I was able to use this printer with usb on my previous computer.

You only mention Windows 98. I believe with just FE (first edition) you need some special patches to get USB to work, if at all. I think you want to be sure you're using Windows 98SE for best USB compatibility.

You'll need different drivers for the printer for USB than for parallel... Have a look in the device manager and make sure there's nothing unidentified under Universal Serial Bus Controllers section; if there is, remove it. Now boot up the machine without the printer connected. Power on the printer, and connect the USB cable.

With luck, you'll now get prompted for drivers.

If the above doesn't work, try removing all USB controllers in device manager. Reboot without printer connected and let them get redetected/reinstalled. Reboot again and connect printer.

Good luck!

Maybe I am mistaken. But as far as I remember, I used to use USB mouse with Win98 first edition.

I am not a computer expert but this is how I made my USB printer recognized. Cold boot, with the printer on.
