Hey all,

My parents and I decided to give our old dell P3 500 mhz computer to my grandparents, but there is so much crap on there so I wanted to reinstall windows 98. The problem is that it's been so long since I"ve had to do anything with that computer, that I can't find the cd-key. Is there a way I can get it either from the CD, or from the computer itself? Thanks a lot!

The Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder is a freeware utility that retrieves your Product Key (cd key) used to install windows from your registry. It has the options to copy the key to clipboard, save it to a text file, or print it for safekeeping. It works on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Office 97, and Office XP. This version is a quick update to make it work with Windows Server 2003.

So, you have your Windows 98/Millennium disk but can't find the 25 character alpha-numeric code that allowed for the installation of Windows. If you cannot find your product key, it is easily located in the registry of Windows. Just follow these steps:

[*]Open regedit
[*]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version
[*]Locate the Productkey entry on the right and you will find the 25 character alpha-numeric code for your copy of Windows

a program called Everest will tell ya.

if its on the CD, it would be in a file called msbatch.ini (view in notepad)

that get you the product id that was generated by the key not the actual key itself
