Windows 98 administrator privileges problem

I am trying to install People PC software on a friends older computer who is running Windows 98. I can get the cd to load, but after the flash intro it comes up and says I need to logon to a profile that has administrator privileges. There are no other users on the computer. When the logon screen initially came up I pressed cancel to get to the desktop and deleted the other users. He was not sure what the passwords were for them.
Any ideas?

There is no such thing as administrator privledges on Windows 98. Windows 98 has no concept of user rights.

Something is pooched with their installer if it's telling you to login with admin rights.

I didn't think there should have been with Windows 98. I'm glad you confirmed that. I guess I can try to just put the file needed on a floppy disk or my usb drive and install it that way. I'm guessing maybe the installer cd was trying to install the Windows XP version or something like that ????

The problem is that you pressed Esc at the "logon" screen, and therefore were not technically logged on to Windows. This can cause a few issues with Win98, most commonly the inability to access network shares, though I suppose it could be the reason preventing you from being able to install PeoplePC as well.

Go into the Windows folder and delete all .pwl files you see (easier to do a file search for *.pwl). This will delete any passwords established for logging in to Win98 and allow you to just hit Enter with a blank password to log on properly the next time.

Try that, should resolve the issue.
