Windows 95?

I'm looking for a copy of Windows 95 to put on an old system I want to run classic games on. I have a legit key on the Windows 95 manual, but I don't have the Windows install CD. Anybody know where to download a legit copy? I checked isohunt and a couple other places, but all I found was a Czech copy that didn't sound legit. Thanks.
 
I don't recall ANY games that ran on Win95 that wouldn't run on Win98, so you can probably expand your search. It'd be a lot easier to find Win98 than Win95.

Actually, my recollection of gaming in 1995-1997 was that you'd boot into a DOS disk with a memory manager of some sort, anyway, for most high-end games.

I think you need DOS installed to install Win95 anyway. You could skip that step and run straight DOS.

Yeah, it's just that I have a key for 95 and I'm *trying* to be somewhat legal. 😀 I guess I really could just run DOS though since I'm thinking of games from the X-Wing and TIE Fighter era.

Yeah. It's been a while, but my recollection is that Win95 didn't leave enough free memory for many games. So you'd end up booting into DOS with various Config.sys files and combinations of HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.SYS to match the needs of the game.

Oh the days of getting all your TSRs loaded HIGH to have as much of your 640KB LOW memory available. I think my best was 633. 😀

With today's systems you could probably run 8 VMs and play 8 different games at the same time and still have to chop up clock cycles to make it playable. (without sound of course!)
 
Oh man, I do remember messing with all those settings for different games. I guess DOS 6.2 should be freely available now. I'll see if I can find a copy of 98 to mess around with too.
 
I had win95 on like a dozen floppy's, threw it out like 5 years ago.

Still got several 98 and 98se discs, just for that rreason to run like Mech warrior 2 and 3 and old games like that.

Yes if i recall we would boot with a floppy, prepare HDD with FDISK, format FAT32 (B version 95 and higher) then boot with floppy with CD drivers so CD rom was accessible and copy the cab files to a folder (Win95) on the C drive, run setup from there. It was much faster that way.
 
Back then, when MS OS keycodes were in the form of a phone number, did anyone else know that the number for 800 information 800-555-1212 was a valid key? I always wondered if that were an intentional backdoor, or just coincidence.

That may have been back in the day of VC4.0, I think that's what it worked on. I don't remember what the keycodes for Win95 looked like.
 
I have a win 95 cd from an old gateway system... but whether I could locate it after moving is another story.

If you put that in today it would probably take it then give you a message when you activate like "Not so fast there...you cannot cheat the system!" :biggrin:

For the longest time, 111-111-1111 Was a valid key for MULTIPLE MS products! Ah, those where the days 🙂
 
Back when WP5.1 ruled the roost in DOS 3.3 I remember installing it (from 5.25 floppy!) and not having the serial number. Well in the box it where it says it will be in the format xxxx-xxxxx etc. I figured it would be funny (since I already figured I was not getting any further) and typed in THAT example. It worked! :biggrin:

Serials, keys, etc. are just an honesty system. Today's measures are more difficult to sidestep but not impossible. Even expensive software requiring hardware "dongles" to be attached have been cracked. They build a better anti piracy scheme and along comes a better cracker! Some people out there crack stuff because they like the challenge.
 
Am I the only one thinking drivers may be a problem? If the OS doesn't support it, what hoops will you have to jump through to get devices working?

In other words, are Win95 drivers readily available?
