Windows 95 question

Yeah, I know I've made a lot of posts about this, but just bear with me, please.

Anyway, I just looked at my Win95 version, and it says it has USB support. This probably means its a later version. DO you think that I could use this version on a modern, ATX based system? i.e. works with AGP, etc. $80 for an new OS that doesn't give me anything and just takes away space and RAM is something I'd like to avoid.

Yes. Having USB support means that it is either OSR2.1 or OSR2.5.

Remember to install the USB patch for USB and AGP functionality.

There is one limitation that exists.....a problem with hard drives larger than 32GB. Microsoft has refused to fix the problem in Win95, but has made a patch available for Win98.

You might also be interested to know that the next version of Microsoft Office (version 10), will not install on Win95. They have put in OS checking and will only install on Win98 or later.

Thanks AndyHui, you've given me one more reason to try an alternate operating system 🙂
I've tried Linux but after hours and hours of d*cking with it I've come to the conclusion that its not for home users.

This a conspiracy theory but I think Microsoft is in cahoots with government agencies and is installing undetectable spyware and other nasty stuff in their latest addition operating systems.

AndyHui: I play games and surf the net only, MSOffice. And my HDD is exactly tenth the size of that limitation. But why would I need a USB patch if its syas &quot;with USB support&quot; on the CD? And if I really do need a USB and AGP patch, where are they and how many of them are there?

What patch is this? Do you have a URL for more info? FWIW, I've installed several 40GB drives in Win95 boxes at work, with no problems...

Haervii: the USB patch covers both USB and AGP functionality. It is located in the \other\updates\usb directory on your Win95 CD.

It's all very well saying there's a patch for win95, but what if it doesn't really work out like mine didn't?
No USB in DSS80 speakers- MS wouldn't let the software be installed. This is more microsoft policy to force upgrades. But even apart from this, the USB functionality in 95 is still strictly limited, which is why many products say they only work in 98.
2 AGP cards could not function properly if at all.
I grant you that ME does take up more memory and disk space but it's all for a good reason you know... like higher taxes.

What if you ran the FAT32 drive converter? I think then
you could have drives over 32MB if your BIOS supports them.
FAT32 drive converter was included in the latest WIN95 OS
releases.Correct me if i'm wrong.
 
I had win95 osr2.1 (with USB and AGP support)

The USB support was bad enough that I upgraded to Win98SE.
The amount of patches and updates that you needed to apply to Win95 to get it up to the level of win98 became unbearable...Win95 would not work with a USB keyboard or mouse...maybe you don't care...but it's something to think about. My scanner worked OK though. There is the 32GB hard drive limit thing...and the AGP support is pretty flakey...if I installed AMD's AGP mini-port it was very unhappy with it...
Fortuantely I had a Voodoo3 at the time which was basically a PCI card with an AGP connector...
Even after all the patches and stuff are applied and Win95 is running up to speed, it still wasn't nearly as stable as my machine is wth Win98SE..

There are lots of good reasons to upgrade to Win98SE over Win95B.
I'm still fishing for a good reason to choose WinME over Win98SE though..

(Note: beware of Win98 first edition..that was an awful mess..)

I think Dark Sage's implication was that you can find Win98SE for about the price of a blank CDR if you look hard enough. Though I could be wrong (about him meaning that, it's certainly true).

But anyhow...after considering my Win95 install and playing around with a &quot;borrowed&quot; copy of Win98SE, I decided it was worth the money to get the Upgrade Edittion of Win98SE. Much more stable and far better USB and AGP support, even with the Win95 patch.
 
I had a bear of a time trying to use USB in Win95, which was the main reason I chose Win98SE. That and the cheap solution for ICS back when I did not have the Linksys DSL router...
 
I know this is probably illegal and I'll get flamed but remember, which is worse:

Giving money to Microsoft or
Stealing from Microsoft?

I'd say giving money to them, (i.e. buying Win98 is worse)

That said, can I possibly borrow a friend's Win98 CD that came with their computer and install it on mine in place of '95? Thanks in advance
