I'm still running XP at home, though my new work computer has windows 7 on it and it's pretty decent. Still not so much better than XP that I would want to spend money on it though.

Lol. Guess he's still using a beeper too. Who knows if these mobile phones will ever catch on. :sneaky:

Everyone conveniently forgets how bad XP was when it first came out. Especially its piss poor security. It took three years for it to be truly fixed.

I don't feel like screwing around with my current rig too much right now. I'll wait for the public beta to get released before I start playing around with it.
 
Windows 8 is the most ugly, and painful to use piece of software ever imagined. It is definitely a downgrade, even from Vista which sucked ass. The Metro UI is simply stupid. I do not want those stupid tiles on a desktop. There is no start menu. No easy way to get to a command prompt in less than 3 steps.

Will not be using this useless POS. Microsoft is out of their mind if they think people are going to like this.

A GUI designed for touch is no good if I can't touch it. There is no way I am getting rid of my 30" and 24" for something that is smaller that is multitouch on the desktop side.

Is it time to short sell MS because they wont be around long?
 
I tried to shut it down but it's not easy at first use. Power button worked though. I usually don't use the power button on the computer case to shut it down.

when i posted that it made sense in my head, but now when i re read it i see how it looks contradicting.

1. when i say they are going for the gold, i mean they are putting all the cards on the table, this is a huge change, imo along the lines of going from dos to win 3.1 this is not your grandfathers windows....

2. i am finding updated things that i really enjoy such as simple things like the new task manager. its freaking awesome.

3. even though i like somethings about it, i dont like all the changes, for example i am not crazy about the start menu essentially being gone.

i am very excited overall for this release though because imo microsoft has been churning out very good software as of late and i think they may actually have the right stuff to pull this off. i do think it will be a very polarizing release though. people hated leaving xp behind to go to vista/7, they are going to have a heart attach when they see win 8.....

XP is old and antiquated. Windows 7 is amazing and why someone would hold out on enjoying the Windows 7 experience is beyond me. It's just the old fogies sitting on their yawn complaining about the kids.

Now as for Metro UI, the future growth is in mobile devices, tablets and all that. Microsoft is getting a head of it with this UI. It will be awesome on a touch device.

For me on my laptop I don't use the metro all that much, so I just hit the little Windows key, and it flips from the Metro UI right to my desktop and I have no problems with the metro.

I really wish I had one of those all in one computers with the multitouch screens I see demoed sometimes. I'd love to see how this performs on that.
 
I always wait until SP1 for my general usage computers and my file/web server. I might check it out earlier on my test system though.

I've been hearing good things about 8 but I heard good things about longhorn until it released. Then the masses got their hands on it and convinced everyone that vista was awful, which after SP1 it was fine for me. It will be interesting how people take this version.

That's because vista was in development hell for a long time. XP shouldn't be thought of as the standard when it comes to OS release cycles (look at the time span from 3.1, 95, 98, 98SE, ME, XP, Vista).

Has anyone else found an easy "power off"? I'm running it in a virtual box and the only way I could find to shut the stupid thing down was to first log off (by clicking my profile picture) and then clicking the shutdown button after dragging the stupid screen around... That was much more painful than it should be.

The other thing I'm not liking is the fact that it feels harder than it should be to find my applications. Damn it, I want my start menu to give me folders so I can organize stuff, not this blob of applications that I once ran. Heck, I miss the ability to quickly search for a command to launch.

This seems like somewhat of a slap in the face for power users in favor of making it easy for everyone to use.

Mine are all the way to the side in the Metro UI, just scroll all the way over.
 
Like intels tick-tock MS has their own version it goes, fail-success, windows vista was fail, 7 was success so 8 will be fail according to the release schedule. Wait for windows 9 guys, word has it they are integrating facebook into the kernal :thumbsup:

The one thing that annoys me is that I can't quite figure out how to get out of full screen search. Giant green screen with no obvious way of getting back to the desktop. A lot of this UI I feel needs to be improved to work better with a mouse, doesn't seem terribly intuitive to use.


The changes in the win7 'app' interface are nice, ie-ribbon menu bars, new task manage, however I don't much care about the rest on a M+KB interface.
