I downloaded it and burned the iso but I hope there is a easy and reliable way to partition my desktop c: that has my win 7 on it and 15 gigs reserved for system restore

OMG this is even a bigger POS than Vista. No start menu or an easy way to get to a run command, plus the phone UI looks like ass. Guess I am skipping this. Hope Server 8 is more useful.

I'd use a virtual machine, especially for an alpha release. There's no point in dicking up your drives just to play around. Nothing good will come from that. Alternatively, if you have a spare drive, even if it's small, you could install to that. Disconnect your main drive, plug up the spare, install, then hook your primary drive back up. Then you can use BIOS to select which drive to boot to.

MM good idea. What virtual machine would you recommend?

Personally, I use VirtualBox. It's free, and it works with Linux. MS VirtualPC is probably the easiest to use, but the least powerful of the VM choices. It's perfectly fine for using Windows on Windows if you aren't doing anything fancy. VmWare is a good package, but I haven't used them in years. You used to have to register with them to use VmWare server. I don't know if you still do, or not. It honestly isn't a big deal, but I just don't feel like it. VirtualBox fills my needs, with one less step.

Downloading now, thanks. Could this run Snow Leapord on my pc?

I once um... acquired an VmWare image of OSX, and ran that for a little while on my PC. If it was done once, it could be done again, but I don't think it's as straightforward as Windows or Linux.

I skip every-other version of windows.

Gonna probably skip 8 and probably go with 9.

Past history of upgrades: windows 3.11 - Windows 95 - NT4 - windows 2000 - xp - windows 7

Man that would suck if you got caught on the other cycle:

98SE, Windows ME, Windows Vista 😀

I'm still running XP at home, though my new work computer has windows 7 on it and it's pretty decent. Still not so much better than XP that I would want to spend money on it though.

I paid for an OS once (Vista64). And so I'm going to use it till I can't anymore. Works perfectly fine for me.

I usually wait a least a year after release before switching to a new version of Windows, with Windows 7 being the exception.

I have it running in a virtual box and played around with it for a bit today. Not sure how I feel about the metro UI, never been a big fan of it on wp7, but it would work nicely on tablets. I just don't see any use for it to be on the PC version.

Another one already? Am I getting old or is the release cycle speeding up? It seems like I used XP forever.

This is a developer preview release, not even a beta. Does not seem to be released much faster than past previews to me. This is for Win8 dev's to get a build that they can start working on, to ensure app compat, driver compat, etc.

A family member works for Microsoft now so I can buy legal copies for $30 all day long. I will get it as soon as it is available at the company store.

Windows 7 has been on of the best OS's that I have every used from MS. I liked Vista also, much more than XP. I am glad my wife went back to school, at least if it is any good, I can get a copy for 29.99. Or maybe Houseparty will have a Windows 8 party and I can get a free copy like I did with Windows 7 64 Ultimate edition.
