I think we need a more definitive, well-rounded thread discussing this. Thus far, there have been pieces here and there and opinions about this or that scattered across many seemingly unrelated threads.
How about we just cut to the chase and completely focus on the value/performance proposition?
My specific curiosities:
Upgrading (true upgrade, no format) from Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (might be Win7 Professional, come to think of it) to Windows 8 Pro x64. Much in the way of performance hit compared to a fresh install of Win8? I realize this varies depending on system upkeep, but suffice it to say, my Win7 install I've taken care of.
Also, there are the "disable the Start screen, replace with start menu" customizations. I may or may not use these on my personal system, but I also might convince my folks to upgrade to Win8 and would probably use some such utility there.
Aside from bootup and shutdown times, is there much other noticeable performance boosts on Win8? From what I've gathered online, it appears, with Nvidia at least, that high-resolution game performance is pretty much equal with Win7.
This would be on an SSD, by the way.
Anyone familiar with any current apps/programs/utilities/etc, especially device drivers, that are specifically Win7 compatible but turn around and completely breakdown under Windows 8?
Oh, and I just picked up the Logitech T650 touchpad, and it's a beautiful thing. Minor annoyance with some clicking/gestures, but curious to see if Logitech can update that through drivers/software in the future. (click and drag, like a laptop touchpad, is not the same and a little more cumbersome, for example). But the suite of gestures are quite nice, and when playing around with it in the Windows 8 Release Preview, the gestures and overall mousing with the touchpad was wonderful indeed.
So far, I'm also enjoying this touchpad in Ubuntu and Windows 7 too. Sadly, no Logitech software in Ubuntu so not all the gestures are available. It may be tweaked by some other means, but I haven't discovered how as of yet. Regardless, this thread is about the move to Windows 8.
