Windows 8 to 8.1 upgrade stuck on load screen, then...

finally crashes.

This is on my Mil's HP Pavikion G7 with an SSD installed.

It was still on 8 and showed that it hadn't installed updates in over 3 years. After cloning the drive, running the Microsoft fixit a few times, finally got it to install updates. Finally got it to where it would run the 8.1 update. It made it to a restart, installed through percentages, and rebooted again. Now it is sitring at the HP logo. It crashed after what seemed like forever on this screen, and now it is back on the HP screen with the spinner.

So does anyone have ideas? I wish I had more time, but we are leaving this afternoon. Would like some input before we have to go and I just have to put the hard drive back in.

I fixed ut, but it was as much Windows as it was me. After the second blue screen, I made a bootable flash drive with 8.1. I just went into options and told it to boot Windows 8. It actally picked up where it left off and a few seconds later it was at the 8.1 config screen. Due to being pressed dlfor time, I wasn't able to look furthuer into it. But the machine is doing well.

If need be you can perform a clean install on it and start fresh.

Yeah, there wasn't time for that. But it was part of the reason I made the flash drive with 8.1. I still don't get what fixed it (since MS loves to hide everything it's doing behind an image). If worse came to worse, I was going to put the hard drive back in and try again later.

It did appear to write at least one successful minidump, so the next time she wants me to connect I am going to look at it. We are probably going to push it up to 10 at some point, as she does like the layout. But she has put up with 8 for a while, so we'll see, since 8.1 is a much better layout (IMO, of course).
