Windows 8 server does not sleep when main PC is turned on

The server is supposed to switch itself off after 30 minutes of inactivity but it never does, until my main PC is turned off.

Why is my main PC keeping the server from sleeping? Ive unmapped all network drives and the server still stays on. The server has 4 drives which are shared, i get the feeling this has something to do with it, my main pc is doing something involving the shared drives and its keeping the server awake. Even though i don't access them. If i need to and its pretty intermittent that i do i can wake it via magic packet so that's not a problem.

Any solutions to this?

Is the server connected to the internet, or just your local network? I think the best way to narrow this down is to take the server off the network and see if it sleeps properly. Should narrow things down a good bit.

Yup its connected to the internet, it sleeps fine when disconnected from the network too.

If you set it to be connected to the network but disconnected from the internet, does anything change?

I'm guessing it won't but worth a shot in my book.
I would look for an enabled sharing service like Windows media player holding you up. Do you have anything besides folders being shared on the server (email, printer, etc)? I know windows 7 (and I assume windows 8) has sharing settings under power options that will keep it from sleeping as well. WOL is also a consideration.
