Windows 8 networking issues?

Often when I try to access my desktop(win7) on the LAN from my laptop(win8, it says windows cannot access the computer. Sometimes if I try a few more times, it'll connect, or if I remote desktop to it(might just be a coincidence).

Also remote desktop frequently disconnects for a split second. This happens every few minutes. It happens on two different laptops I have with win8. I never had this issue when using win7, vista, or xp. I've been using remote desktop for about a decade and I never had any of these issues.

Any possible ideas on what's going on?
