Windows 8 Metro Apps -- Now with more Walled Garden App Store

That is one of their selling points for Metro style apps.. validated by Microsoft, safe and secure.

It makes sense that enterprises and developers themselves should be able to bypass the store, as corporations might write their own custom applications for the metro UI for their employees to use but not published to the store.

Metro is designed to be the curated part of Windows 8.. old win32 is still around for everything else.

I'm a bit surprised you'll only be able to get Metro applications through the store, but all things considered it's consistent with everything else about Metro. It's going to be the most interesting launch of Windows yet, that's for sure.

I was expecting to write a Metro app to distribute to clients for login and services. This news is distressing.

The freedom available in a regular desktop is nice, but one day I see Metro replacing it for the vast majority of users. In essence, the desktop's freedoms will be meaningless as time goes on. Metro will cause a serious revolt if this is as bad as it sounds.
