Windows 8. I Knew it

I reinstalled Win8 clean and updated straight to 8.1 before doing anything else just to avoid any potential issues.

I thought it's common knowledge that in-place updates can have problems.

Most problems often involve 3rd party which is furthered by the user themselves in how they use the PC. Windows by a complete default install is usually extremely stable unless it's hardware related. Users get to messing around with crap, installing utilities, addons and UI enhances and other nonsense that further alters registry or messes with important files, then there's drivers which you add them altogether and that won't help. Now you try to install an SP which has it's own expectations and often can't cope with providing all the previous BS configurations and alterations back to you in in every aspect but it tries, it can't ignore it all and just wipe stuff so it's forced to try to get your settings and files back right because MS doesn't want to tick you off and that is the story as to why your system is all butt nuttered up.

Can have problems. Had to uninstall and reinstall Avira on one machine. But overall, while it is a safe bet there will be minimal to no problems with a clean install, I find it not worth the extra effort nowadays with everything working mostly from an update install.

This, some third party software will have problems. Such as the 8 gadget sidebar. That too, I had to reinstall since it went away with the update.

but this begs the question how would you have made it easier for most users???

Remember the annoying paperclip in older versions of Office? They could bring that back and it would pop up saying "HEY YOUR DRIVERS ARE OUTDATED!" every 10 seconds...

For like the last 20 years MS had altered between good (or a major upgrade for the time) and dud. I'm not counting sub versions like Win95 2.1 (OSR 2), etc.

Windows 8 (dud) (you have no idea how much more efficient win8 than 7, while still being on the same base kernel, hell half the stuff being lauded in mavericks has been in win8 for a year+)
Windows 7 (good)
Windows Vista (dud) (has 90% in it what people like about win 7, most hate is fud and related to poor support by 3rd parties at launch)
Windows XP (good)
Windows Me 14 September 2000 (massive dud)
Windows 2000 17 February 2000 (good)
Windows 98 25 June 1998 (OK to dud)
Windows 95 24 August 1995 (good)

Lets hope windows 9 is killer.

the problem is even on tech forums half the people have no idea what they are talking about or lauding as grea tor shit.

No problems with the 8.1 update here. It's better than 8.0 and 8.2 will likely be better than 8.1, etc.

Some will complain. Some will not. YMMV

The update for dx11.2 is not out yet as far as I know.

Well so far the only problem I've had was Nvidia driver not responding after a while (usually when switching tabs on Chrome) so I dropped from 327.23 to 314.22 and all is good so far.

I even tried 331.58 but no difference.

I ran 8.0 for a few months, then upgraded it to 8.1. I now have 8.1 on one drive and am back to Windows 7 Pro on another drive. I'm running Windows 7 as my default operating system.

The ONLY thing that 8 or 8.1 have which I wish was incorporated in Win 7 is native iso support (mounting/extracting). That isn't really a big deal and free alternatives are available. So far as the Store,Apps, and the Metro gui - I have ZERO use for them.

My take is, what you share re Google, owes to the off the hook privacy intrusion/tracking Google felt just fine about implementing, I think, over a year ago. Saw it right off: suddenly, a thousand tracking cookies vs the perhaps 12 I was getting before the insidious changes.

And, given I appear hardly the only one to loathe and despise Metro everything and the gratuitous glut catering to moronic tablet/touch screen addicts, I still do not understand why people upgrade to 8.....any version.

Looking around the forums.and I notice in Computer help and other.Peoples are having problems after problems with this OS.Drivers/incompatibility with Software.Conclusion. MS is off the track again😡

Sorry, I disagree. Reason I did not run 64-bit XP (and later W7 64 on the system in question when I upgraded to 7) tho my chip was 64 bit capable, was not third party vendors did not write drivers, but, early on, MS did not.

Happy to say, now that I am running W7 64 on this system, not a driver issue in sight, I even found a get around for my old, workhorse HP printer! But in their overweening greed, nobody tell me MS is responsible/responsive in that or related ways.

Were they, we would not already have an official 8.1. That had to get done, ASAP, cause, as usual, MS, again, in its overweening greed to generate more revenue, actually failed to get just that the start button dog and pony change would alienate most humans, and that was costing them bigtime. How they could have missed that, that alone, speaks volumes.

I can't Totally disagree with this.But it is getting worst.Sure the venders are to blame to.and most of you members are familiar to problems with drivers.and that is why forums like Anandtech are there to help.I get so many peoples with new laptop or desktop with windows 8 and they don't like it. So Short story I hope Windows 9 will be better.or 10

I often wonder, if MS did not cut the deals with hardware Mfgs they do---and nobody tell me that isn't a big percentage of their revenue---how many people would be running W 8 altogether?

I mean, apart from autopilot hotshots who are convinced newer is better and even de rigueur.

No issues here. Been on Win8 since launch and 8.1 since launch.

I like Apple, but after Apple released MacPro pricing, I built a new 4930k rig on Win 8.1 to handle Adobe CC (including After Effects and Premiere Pro) and Cinema 4d work. For less than the price of a Mac Pro quad, I got a hexa, 32GB ram (even at these crappy prices) and had enough left over for a 27" IPS monitor.

I don't think Win 7 or Win 8 were "duds" and don't get the "I can't deal with Metro!" rage. I do use the Windows key on the keyboard a lot for the first time ever.

If I had one complaint, the folder menu bar ribbon is kind of a junky looking mess. I kinda like the idea, but am not a fan of the execution.

I upgraded all the PC's in my house to Windows 8.1. However i was unable to update a brand new HP Envy (fresh from the cardboard box) which a friend bought. My guess is it's the crapware that comes with the OS, but i wasn't ready to spend hours cleaning out all of it.

So i just said bad-luck 😛
