I've ready a couple blogs/articles and was considering buying an ebook on how to do this. I was wondering if anyone here has done this yet?

What kind of server? I'm sure you can serve files with limitations like the 10 client limit that MS has always put into client OSes. Most free server software doesn't care about the OS, like Apache, but a lot of commercial server software will only install on Server editions of Windows.

I currently have a WHS 2011 and was updating the hardware. I have two licenses for Windows 8 Pro and thought...why not just make the new server Windows 8 Pro? I only use the server for File Sharing, backups and running two VMs.

Actually the limit is 20 on windows 7. It was 10 for XP, and 10 for Vista home basic, and at least one other version of Vista came with 20 concurrent connections.

And yes assuming there are not weird bugs or issues with 8 and is just like 7 in this regards it should work fine as a home server.

Well heck 8 will be just fine and dandy for that....other than being really new with potential bugs and compatibility issues etc.
