Windows 8/8.1 - extremely slow internet

I won't upgrade to 8.1 yet. Too many people having issues.

So i have sort of the same problem. I recieved a new computer with windows 8.1 some days ago and since then ive been trying to fix this internet thing. One minute the internet run slow as heck and cant even load facebook and takes serveral seconds to start a spotify song, the next min it runs as fast as it should. I tried using 3 different wireless adapters who should all be working for windows 8. I even used the one i used for my old windows 7 and my internet was great! i tried almost everything and i am starting to give up :-(. It cant be my modem/router cause it worked just fine with my old pc. It also takes days to patch games and update them etc. Everything that has anything to do with the internet is just abnormally slow.

Specs: AMD X4 FX4130 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz 500GB HDD Seagate 7200Rpm DVD-RW AMD R7850 2GB GDDR5 And windows 8.
(There are more ports than it says in this though so im not sure if the information is ideal)

Please help! oh and its windows 8.1 if it makes a difference

I too was going nuts trying to figure out the exact same things as experienced in this post. On a whim, I unchecked the IPv6 in network properties and everything got better. Several days later I re-enabled and the issue returned. Once again I unchecked and everything is AOK in win 8.1.

My only thought now is that this can't possibly be a good thing? Don't I want to have IPv6 enabled?

Is this a hardware issue on my machine - my router or is it my ISP?

Also set the power options for those wifi/network cards. You can go into the devices properties under the power management tab and uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device under low power".

also, make sure to set the Network and Wifi cards to "Max Performance" in both low battery and full charge under whatever power mode you have under power options in the control panel. Especially on laptops. These power options are notorious for causing frequent disconnects and drops on a lot of mobile systems.

Unchecking IpV6 can also help it some cases.

Also, you mentioned you have a HP Win7 license, so I assume this is a HP. If it's an HP laptop, like a pavilion or envy dv6/7, it likely has the Centrino wireless-N wifi card (that also has Bluetooth) and can be a bit finicky with certain wireless routers, especially when using WPA2 encryption for some reason. Since Windows 8/8.1 wont let you configure WPA anymore outside of first time setup to a wireless network using WPA (and not WPA2), you have to configure it manually using the netsh command line option or through a XML script to force WPA.

alternatively, if you don't know how to do this, or want a simpler way and are using a Intel wireless card in your system, you can just download the proset configuration tool from intel's site for your card, which will enable you to use WPA encryption in Win8/8.1 again by setting up your wireless connection through that tool and not windows wireless.

I, as many others seem to, have had similar issues. I'm not very tech minded, so my "fixes" were to re-install windows 8.1 completely. It worked, for a week at best... However my internet issues aren't just related to browsers.
I've downloaded Titanfall at least 3 times now... 50gb game is a pain to have to re-download constantly... When my internet decides to play up, I won't even be able to log into Origin, let alone download anything. Yet, after reinstalling windows it would usually start running at 3 mbps... Of course, when these issues are occurring, my browser seems incredibly slow, and usually can't load any pages at all, not even google. At the present, it seems only certain pages are slow to download, and Origin etc won't work. After reading everyone's comments, I'm going to try unchecking IPv6, and hope to god it works. But with the frustrations I've had so far, I'm not giving it high hopes.
Also, has anyone else been having issues turning their pc off when experiencing these issues? When mine starts to play up, occasionally I'll "Shut down" my computer, everything will close and all communications are cut, but the pc keeps running, the lights and fans are constantly running. I've only had these issues since upgrading to 8.1 (Computer is pretty darn good, and only 5 months old)
