Windows 8.1?

What exactly is Windows 8.1? Is it a new operating system already?

It's an update, refinement on Windows 8,sort of like service pack but more with new added features and some changes IMHO sort of like Win98 to Win98SE.

Windows 8 users will be able to upgrade for free to 8.1.

So think of Win8.1 as new improved version of Windows 8 with added features.

Review of preview version just in,http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/jun/27/windows-81-review-hands-on .

it's still in Preview now not final.

I don't recommend you update just yet as I saw a myriad of issues on another forum for people who have tried the preview ranging from super slow performance to bug and glitches with Metro Apps.

Just wait till the final is released then you can upgrade for free

So need to update my Win8 to Win8.1?

It's not final yet, that will arrive later this year,at the moment preview is like a beta version ,you are able to download and try it but it's not official/final version.

I'm waiting for final version.

I used 8.1 for four hours. or so. It would not load Norton Internet Security 2013, saying there was a compatibility issue, and my wireless adaptor would not work. I did not spend any time trying to resolve either because 8.0 plus Start8, or something similar, is far superior to 8.1. 8.1 is better than 8.0, but it still has a mediocre (at best) UI for Desktop users.

The only major improvement for me is they added the shutdown and restart options to the "right click" pop-up menu on the desktop's lower left corner. Search now includes the three categories instead of making the user click on "settings" or "files". Unfortunately, it still takes the user back to the Start page.

The Start button has been added back -- but it is a joke. They added a button to a corner that already was hot, but they added "Zero" functionally to the button. It just takes the user to the Start page just the like hot corner already did.

I find it hard to believe that Microsoft thinks this button will pacify the many people who complained. The people were complaining about the missing functionality, not the missing icon.

Norton has an update out today to fix NIS not working with 8.1

exactly, people asked for the start menu to be back, what did Microsoft do? get you a crippled start menu that simply takes you back to the Metro Start screen! wow! what genius thought of that at MS? 🙄

NIS 21 beta works OK, I'm on my 4 yr old Compaq notebook and had no issues doing a clean install. All drivers were picked up during the install or after a few Windows Updates.
Love it, seems really nice. Only irk I have is newly installed apps from the "Store" are a pain to find on the Start menu, but after that all is well for me including MS Office 2007.
Oh by the way, Lightscribe would not install at this point.
