Windows 8.1 Won't Boot - PLEASE HELP! -

My computer has been working fine without issue until late last night.

I turned it on and went to get a drink and noticed that the computer had shut off.

Surprised, I returned to turn it back on and then I saw the motherboard logo and immediately a blue screen that said, "Recovery, Your Computer Needs to be Repaired." and along with that, an error code of: 0xc000000e.

I searched for hours last night for a solution but nothing has worked so far.

The issue I see is that once I go into the UEFI (BIOS), under Boot Priority, it always said "Windows Boot Manager" since I'm using an SSD where Win 8.1 Pro x64 is installed and created a GPT instead of an MBR. Now, I am seeing "Microsoft Windows" instead of "Windows Boot Manager" and I cannot find it anywhere!

I used DiskPart after inserting the installation DVD in Command Prompt and checked to see that all three partitions are there - 111GB (120GB SSD), 300MB called Recovery, and an unlabeled 100MB partition. All three partitions are there.

I tried to use:

bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd

I tried going through this guide: How To Rebuild the BCD in Windows

However, when I "rebuildbcd", I get only the following (in BOLD):

Scanning all disks for Windows installations.

Please wait, since this may take a while...

[Successfully scanned Windows installations.Total identified Windows installations: The operation completed successfully.]

It doesn't say whether it was successful or not and the source drive keeps showing up.

What I mean is:

C:\bootrec /rebuildbcd

Scanning all disks for Windows installations.

Please wait, since this may take a while...

C:\

I'm not sure why it doesn't give me a success/fail message. I tried it several times to no avail. I am therefore unable to proceed with that guide in that link above.

When I reboot and go into the UEFI, it still shows "Microsoft Windows" and I can't get "Windows Boot Manager".I ran CHKDSK /R and after that the UEFI did show "Windows Boot Manager" but when I rebooted, I got the same "Recovery" blue screen with the same error code (0xc000000e) - and Microsoft Windows was showing up under Boot Priority #1 instead of "Windows Boot Manager."I really need help in fixing this as I am not sure what happened - the system was working perfectly until last night and I need to have my computer running properly ASAP.

Please help!

*EDIT: I was able to run SFC /SCANNOW using the following command:

I used this guide: http://www.fixedbyvonnie.com/2013/12/how-to-repair-the-efi-bootloader-in-windows-8/#.Uyfvp17SaA8

and was able to see "Windows Boot Manager" in the UEFI (BIOS), but when I restarted, it again went back to "Microsoft Windows" and gives the same error!

I also went into the "Volume 3" where the FAT32 100MB is located and tried to rebuild the BCD there. I got the successful operation completed message showing one Windows Installation. Now, the UEFI/BIOS shows "Windows Boot Manager" correctly but STILL SHOWS THE SAME error!

PLEASE HELP!

found this after a google search....HTH

Step 1: Start from your installation or recovery CD.

To do this you will probably need to press a key before you boot, this will most likely be something like F12. for more information about booting from cd look here. (link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/start-windows-from-a-cd-or-dvd )
Step 2: Choose the correct recovery options. (gallery)

Click on "Repair your computer"

Click on "Advanced Options"

Click on "Command Prompt"

Click on "Troubleshoot"

Step 3: Enter the correct commands.

Diskpart
List volume
Select volume=2 (replace “2″ with the number that is associated with the “ESP” label)
assign letter=Z
exit
bcdboot C:\windows /s Z: /f UEFI (replace C: with the volume letter that is named “OS”)

To make it even simpler here are some screenshots:

diskpart windows 8

list volume windows 8

select volume windows 8

assign letter windows 8

exit diskpart windows 8

bcedit windows 8

Step 4: Restart your computer and be happy.

If everything worked out fine, you should now be able to restart your computer and enjoy your windows 8 machine.

Those instructions are very similar to the ones in the link I posted in the OP.

I tried it as you had said - except there was no label called "ESP". I just assumed that's the FAT32 volume that has no label(?) since we have assign a letter to it(?).

I did that and the UEFI shows "Windows Boot Manager" as the first Boot Priority Device but it still has the same error w/ Recovery page. :(

And the volume that's labeled "OS" for me says "Win 8.1 Pro". I assume that's what you mean?

Any other suggestions/help?

So how many physical drives are in the computer?

Are you running more than one OS?

Is there a message below the "0xc000000e" code.

Is there a message below the "0xc000000e" code.

1.) There are 10 physical drives: 8-SSD array, 1 SSD (OS), 1 HDD.

I disabled all the other drives through the UEFI/BIOS and had only the OS SSD active.

2.) I am running only one OS - Win 8.1 Pro (x64).

3.) There is no message below the error code.

I saw the PM that you sent me, but your case is different from the problem that I had in the other thread.

In my case, I knew what happened because the errors were the direct result of the testing that I was doing, and so too was the problem that the OP of that thread had--he was trying to do a dual-boot setup and messed up the boot configuration in the process.

Your case is different because it happened right out of the blue, according to your post. You weren't messing with anything, changing drives, installing another OS, etc. Which means that this most likely isn't an issue of a misconfiguration, but rather, a hardware issue. Maybe there was data corruption in the boot loader or the boot loader's configuration? I would suggest first checking the health of the drive (attach it as a data drive to another computer) before going any further...

OK, you probably saw this in your searches, but may be worth a shot.

http://www.prime-expert.com/articles/b16/fix-0xC000000E-required-device-is-inaccessible.php

The whole article is interesting, but the good stuff starts at #4.

Hmm... I haven't seen that one yet.

I downloaded and installed the program on to a CD and booted from it.

I'm stuck at step Step 9 in Part 4 where it asks me to rename/move the BCD files. I get a red box saying "Failed to Move File" and it gives the reason as: "Read-Only File System".

How to proceed? How do I make it writable/movable?

In CMD, I can just use the "attrib -h -r -s" command line to make it visible and writable - not sure how I do that here(?).

EDIT: I can't even delete the files! I tried skipping that step and going directly to the Mount & Boot Center - that doesn't even load!

Outside of attrib, I don't know.

I am starting to think along the lines of code65536, that there is a physical problem with the disk.

I'm creating an image of the SSD right now. Will clean it and reload the image and see if it works.

Glad that worked. So, do you think you ran into an irreparable issue with 8? Sounds like permissions got in the way.

Not sure what happened to cause this 0xc000000e error.

I've had this Corsair ForceGT 120GB SSD for a while now - it has been really good so far.

I backed up my OS using Acronis once everything was working again. Doing weekly backups now so hopefully that will be helpful down the road. :)

Btw, if I get a new SSD and format it MBR, can I reload the image that I backed up now that's part of a GPT formatted disk - this one has 4 partitions - MBR format is just one (or 2) I believe.

Next time around, I think I will go the MBR route just to be safe - GPT/UEFI w/ Win 8.1 Pro seems to be somewhat risky.

Will post the SMART data of the Corsair SSD in a bit - would be great if you can tell me what it means.
