seems that there is a big update coming for 8.1 real soon ( for those of us who have 8.1 via technet & msdn ) supposed to come out right at public release

http://www.winbeta.org/news/windows-81s-first-big-update-called-ga-rollup-leaks-internet

Thanks! Just went ahead and followed the links to install all three of them. Pretty painless so far!

Wish I could say the same for the whole Win8/8.1 experience. Seems like windows update likes to kill my usb ports! Hoping one of the updates will cure the issue. Getting tired of booting up the install media and restoring to a earlier date....Hmm working now so I'm gonna do a backup!

i installed them as well just now, no issues at all.

Seems fine to me and possibly more snappy....May be placebo effect tho.

I enabled file history and made a full backup image just in case along with a restore point....Damn sucks being stuck at the initial windows screen with no input methods. At least if needed I can restore to my current state now.

On 314.22 with my 560Ti card, they have not fixed the lockup issues with later drivers for 4xx,5xx owners,,I tried the 327.23 still got the odd freeze so back to solid 314.22.
oh ok guess I don't have that issue coz I have a GTX 770M

Did you try the latest Beta?

I've been checking feedback in Geforce.com forums ie,

GTX560Ti today... six times freezing and restart... im going back to 314.22... absolut bad driver support... really bad job nVIDIA :-(

I take back my previous statement. Just got a driver crash. I guess its back to 314.22.
I take back what I said as well

Geforce 555

initial performance was great and went without a hiccup for a few days. Then all heck started breaking lose random freezes and hard core spikes in temp made me revert to 314 driver.
Basically had no luck so far unless I stay with 314.22s even on fresh OS install.
I'll wait for next official one or jump over to AMD with a new video card :) .

Looking at the bright side at least those Microsoft updates for Win8.1 went fine.

"SLOPPY DEPLOYMENT"; if you ask me..

...from sourced white paper (i.t. field manual deployment from technical writers):

product key can be found in the system registry. right lick on the start button in desktop mode and select run, type 'regedit' and hit OK.

registry path is:

[hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\win8] value [productkey]

copy the product key, open the PC info screen described "launch windows activation," and enter the product key into the dialogue box.

next...

if windows fails to activate with the product key, customer will need to find the original windows 8 product key, either on the certificate of authenticity on the back of the device, in the email receipt if they used an electronic software download, or in the documentation supplied with the full packaged product used to install windows 8.

if customer has lost their product key, they should conctact microsoft customer support. your local contact number for microsoft support can be found at:

https://support.microsoft.com/gp/customer-service-phone-numbers/en-us

beyond this, -->
next steps: run windows update ... (etc.)

===

clone the drive before the 8.1 update; or risk the ugly adventures some of many end-users are going through.

===

edit:

major changes:
(1) 8.1 does not give the classic start menu back, but a button appears, end-users have to right click on the start menu button to get some kind of list option.

(2) 'search' in charms is collapsed more tightly with finished search-criteria results (looks worse..)

(3) the start menu (tile screen) will no longer allow users to right click on open space to allow the bottom pop-up bar to reveal "all apps," instead - there is a little arrow at the bottom left that allows customers to click on to show "all apps."

(4) other useless add-ons that may make 8.0 more annoying or like-able. and possibly, many more bugs as usual.

A disappointment when moving from 8 to 8.1 was the loss of the Windows Media Center feature that was given free by MS. In exploring 8.1's Control Panel, I noted the "Add Features to 8.1" selection, and it had two choices. Buy a key or use an existing one. I found the free key given by MS for 8 in a text file among my MS downloads. Yeah - I always create a text file for keys!

So, I went back to Control Panel and selected the Add Feture with an existing key. It worked. It is a complex installation, more than the average Windows Update, but it worked, and WMC was placed in the panoply of 8.1 squares. I wanted it on the desktop under Start8. Finally got it.

WMC is buried in the \WINDOWS\EHOME folder, and the go file is EHSHELL.EXE. I sent that to my desktop and it is good to go. WMC now is born again in my 8.1.

I I quickly learned that 8.1 REQUIRES a new 8.1 key. Just happened to have one handy. The rest of the installation took about 45 minutes, and was all automatic.

The process also included a very confusing phase where I had to input my MS Live ID and password.!

So I cannot use my 8.0 key to do a clean install with 8.1 and i don't have a have a MS Live ID. Installing the update on top on your existing install only wastes more disk space. Wish MS didn't make there updates so complicated. If you want to give away 8.1 for free, lets us do a clean install with our 8.0 keys that we paid for already.

So i cannot do a clean install with Windows 8.1 using my 8.0 key? Installing the update on top of 8.0 seems like a mess.

I just used the Windows 8.1 Setup to download the final ISO and create it on a USB bootable UEFI partition:

Your real Windows 8 Windows 8 Pro key will not work in this setup installer, you need to use one of the default Windows 8.1 installation keys (google it)

With my real key I get this:

With one of the default installation keys:

Creating bootable UEFI/GPT USB as we speak:

You can, but you need to grab one of the Windows 8.1 install keys and then when you go to activate you enter your key.

MS Live ID, you don't need, its an alternate way to create a user on Win8/8.1 its useful to have if you want to sync setting/apps between multiple devices.

You can always create a local account

As Berryracer posted above, you make an iso/bootable media a do the fresh install and use a Win8.1 install key

Best thing to do is create an ei.cfg file that has this in it:

Code:
[EditionID]
[Channel]
Retail
[VL]
0
place it in the Sources folder of your USB key installer. Then it won't ask for a key at install. It will ask you to select PRO vs Core for the version.

no u need to input the correct default windows 8.1 core or windows 8.1 pro installation key, not your actual key, then it would work
