Windows 7

I need to get 1 copy of Windows 7 Premium. It can be OEM so I can upgrade from XP.

You guys have been around longer than I - when, and where, will be the best time to purchase it (cheapest). I need it though within the next 2-3 weeks. Are OS usually cheapest as a pre-order (now) or will sales come immediately after release? The cheapest I can find now is about $85 from SuperBiiz.com after $15 promo code and Bing cashback.

Thoughts are appreciated.

You can't upgrade from XP. You'll have to do a clean install. Win 7 upgrade disk will not install from clean boot.

If you have XP, you have to buy full version.

🙁

That's not what Microsoft says.

Running Earlier Versions?
If you have Windows XP, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. But you must back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications. If you?re running Windows 2000, you?ll need to purchase the full product and do a clean install.

Edit: Btw, if you purchase OEM, that IS a full version. OEM doesn't come in an upgrade version.

Timely thread.....I was just thinking the same thing last night.

To be honest, I had expected retailers to have some sort of combo sales in conjunction with the release of W7.

A 1TB hard drive and W7 combo makes a helluva lot of sense to me.

Alas, it appears retailers aren't that smart.

Care to share the $15 promo code?

Credit to this thread at slick deals.

Any other thoughts - this the best we can do? Will price drop, sales or combos appear after launch date, or is the presale (now) the best time to order?!

I would think the best discount would be to have a friend buy the OEM version through a university they go to or a company they work for.

Yeah, I wouldnt expect any price reductions for a while. Maybe some small sale/rebate on Black Friday from certain stores but MS will hold to their pricing for a while I'm thinking. Bill & Steve need to rebuild their lost portfolios from the market crash last year. $85.50 for the OEM version is definitely a great deal.
