Windows 7 won't shutdown - VERY FRUSTRATING

System Specs:
Windows 7
8GB PC1600
Core i7 940
Asrock X58 Extreme 3
Crucial M25 256GB SSD
dual ATI Radeon 4870s in crossfire.
All drivers and BIOS at latest version.

This problem I am having has me SOOO frustrated. There is NO damn reason a computer can't shutdown.

I can't exactly predict when it will happen, but 75% of the time the computer just hangs on the "Windows is Shutting Down" screen and I am stuck having to hold down the power button to do get it shutdown. I have tried closing as many programs as possible before shutting down, logging off completely and it still happens on an unpredictable basis.

If anyone has any advice on what might be causing the problem or where to look, please let me know. THANKS!!

It just gives me a message that the system failed to properly shutdown.

Which is true, since I end up having to hold down the power button to force it to turn off. Source: Kernel Power\

I did let it stay on the shut down screen for a little while and the system eventually rebooted and was given A "windows did not shut down properly" message.

Pull the plug 😀
Nah jk, you should turn off all unnecessary programs before shutting down. If this does not work, download a good free anti virus (not AVG please), might be a trojan horse or a backdoor. I suggest avast!

The problem disappeared for a while and now its back with a vengeance. Now the computer hangs even when I try to restart.

I am using a Sound Blaster X-fi Titanium with Dolby Digital decoder enabled.

I did see this thread and I plan to disable the dolby and DTS encoder based on what I've read in this forum. Im not at home, but hopefully I can get it fixed when I do get home.

ccleaner is a very powerful tool...highly recommend it to anyone you would be amazed at the issues i have cleared with this tool...

Sorry for refloating this old post...

Just wanted to thank for the info, i thought i was condemned to disable digital input/DTS every fucking time i want to turn off or restart my computer if i dont want a nice hang...

So sad for creative, that almost a year have passes, this is still a beta application, and we have 0 doccumentation. And that's not the worst, the worst is that an old thread solved a problem that creative spanish support has no info at all.

Anyways, will try to avoid creative sound cards from now on... bought this card mainly for the digital in, it's not a bad card, but I cannot be more unssatisfied with both drivers and support

Many thanks again
