Windows 7 - Windows update stopped working

evident

Lifer
Just did a clean install of Windows 7 and been applying all of the updates to it. When I finally thought I finished, I started getting an 80246002 error. I've been reading it's an issue with the KB2993651. Is anyone else but me having this issue? I didn't screw something up did i? 😕

Make sure your ActiveX is alive and well. MS Update depends on it.

I notice the same problem today on two machines.

Apparently, it's a DNS issue. Change to different DNS servers, like Google's (8.8.8.8), and you can update again.

I just had the error also prior to installing the update in question, stopping the windows update service, restarting it, then a full reboot resolved it. I am using default DNS servers for Verizon Fios.
PS. it was happening during the checking for updates phase on Win 7

Mmmmm. . . . We've got four win7 machines in the house, and the Windows UPdates have all continued smoothly. I just checked my sig system, and KB2993651 was the last update installed on 8/27/14.

So far, WU is working. Have to check the other systems.

There's an optional update I haven't installed. Is it possible it was instead the cause of the problems here? I don't know the KB code for it -- I'd have to go back and look.

The optional update should be fine.

No problems here. Maybe something specific to your build? I do not install optional updates, maybe a conflict with one of them?

Just change the DNS for now 🙂
