Windows 7 + USB audio = no boot

Like the title says. Friend of mine has a USB bose speaker system. When the speakers are connected W7 hangs at the starting windows screen and won't load. If you start the machine without the speakers connected the machine starts up quickly and perfectly. The speakers work fine if you plug them in after windows is loaded.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like the machine is trying to boot to the USB device. Hot plugging post boot is a valid procedure. Check the BIOS boot order and remove USB from the sequence, or, put it below the HDD.

That would indeed be wierd, if a USB audio device showed up as a USB mass storage device. AFAIK, that's the only type of USB device that can be booted from.

i've seen this before, but with a usb scanner. when plugged in the scanner mounted a small 16meg drive with its own program there for you to run. maybe the usb bose have their own program mounted in this way when started also?

Yea, lots of devices do that so they can include the drivers without including a separate CD for them. Windows hanging on boot because of that seems odd, but then again it is Windows...
