Windows 7 Upgrade

I bought W7 Home Premium for $29.99 (student) and ran into trouble trying to install it last night.

I tried to go from XP (all services packs, updates, etc) to W7 64-bit on a newly-built PC.

I followed the guides and created a bootable ISO disc. Restarted the PC, set DVD Drive as first boot priority, and the windows install screen starts up. I got to the point where I can select and format drives. I deleted my previous partitions (with XP on them) and tried to format and install W7. No dice. I got an error that said something to the effect of "W7 could not create a partition, read your setup log files."

I then tried to do some reading (on my other PC) and read something that with this $29.99 "upgrade" version the install cannot start from a bootable ISO, and that you need to start the install process from insides windows. Well crap, so I re-installed XP (did not install any updates or service packs), put in ISO disc I created and got an error message that said something to the effect of, "This upgrade disc is not compatible with your current version of windows. Make sure you insert the correct installation disc and try again." WTF!

I then used my external HDD to transfer the original files I downloaded (the two box files and .exe file) to the XP computer, double-clicked the .exe file, and when it was done unpacking got an error that said something like, "could not un-pack and write all the necessary files, make sure you have appropriate permissions and that the folders are not read-only." WTF!!

I have no idea what's going on - can anyone help / advise? Maybe I need to install all the service packs for XP - maybe that's what's causing the second error about it not being compatabile with my current version?

What about this work-around: I have Vista installed on my other PC. Could I install Vista and not activate it (b/c I still need it active on my other PC), then just immediately install W7 over Vista?

I appreciate all help guys, thanks.

I just don't get why a simple message saying "this product does not support upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit" could not have been added or better yet why they would cause it not to work in the first place.

It's always been known since Vista that you could not upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit. I suppose all of the XP die hards and Vista haters are just now learning this.

I agree. I'm a computer/windows enthusiast with valid keys and licenses to everything I own. An upgrade in this day and age should not be this complicated and annoying.

I've e-mailed digital river to try and get a link to the "fixed" ISO file, and will let you guys know if that works.

There is no upgrade path from XP to Win 7, much less x86 to x64.
