So, I need to install a second video card in a comp. Currently it has a 6870.

The 6870 has an HDMI port and two DVI ports. One of the DVIs allows for attaching a DSUB adapter while the other would only accept standard DVI.

Two DSUB monitors need to be attached to the comp. The displays only have DSUB connectors.

The mobo has a second 8x PCIe port.

I've been looking around for video cards and it seems that a HD6450 could be a good addition to this comp.

QUESTION: do you think the 6870 and the 6450 will work together? (Windows 7)

The second display is not about gaming.

I'm really surprised that both DVI-I (?) ports won't support a DVI-to-VGA adaptor.

I would verify whether both are DVI-I (carries both digital and analog), or whether one is DVI-I, and one is DVI-D.

Although, if the DVI-to-VGA adaptor physically fits into the connector, that means that the connector is DVI-I physically, so it should, in theory, also support DVI-I signalling.

One of the DVIs has "VGA" printed next to it and that one indeed supports the adapter. The other won't (and has no VGA printed next to it).

Some search turned up that it's normal for certain video cards to have such feature set.

I'll have to live with it. I'm just trying to find out whether these two cards would work together.
 
a 6870 and a 6450 should work just fine in the same machine. they won't X-fire, but that doesn't matter since the 2nd display will not be used for gaming. they'll run on the same set of drivers, so if your 6870 is already up and running, all you really need to do is plug in the 6450 and it should work straight away...
 
im not totally sure, but dual display doesn't work like that. you use only 1 video card adapter not all video adapters at once. so you'll need 1 vid card that will support the 2 monitor connects it has.

edit: nevermind, pci-e solved taht problem
