Windows 7...This is ridiculous

I upgraded to Win7 64 from Vista 64 and my PC is a complete slug.

Files take forever to open and close including simple things like Firefox. When I write text I randomly get lag from when I type to the time it appears.

I'm getting errors like "There was a Problem Sending the Command to the Program" when opening word files.

I've tried everything including using optimizers, installing every single updated driver possible and nothing fixes these problems. I never had this problem before with Vista. The only reason why I upgraded was so I can get my 1080p video to run at 30FPS.

My computer is a C2D 2.4Ghz OCed to 3.0Ghz. I have 6GB of memory. GF800 GT.

My Windows Experience score is 5.9 which supposedly is held back by my HDD even though I have a RAID setup.

Will Win7 let me go back to Vista 64? I can't live with these problems.

Before I would give up I would try a clean installation after backing everything up. Windows 7 flies for everyone I know that uses it and your issue seems to be one of the drawbacks of an Upgrade vice a clean installation.

This is the problem with doing an "upgrade." It is better to do a backup of your files and settings, and do a clean install of Windows 7. What probably happened is some garbage and sludge from your Vista 64 install snuck into your new Windows 7 install. Personally, I would backup all your files and let Windows 7 do a clean install. One thing I would recommend is getting a program called "mozbackup" for backing up all your settings from Firefox. Save this backup and after you reinstall Firefox, run the backup program to restore all your settings.

Personally, I really like Windows 7 compared to Vista. It is much smoother and loads faster. It is worth the effort of reinstalling all your programs and apps. Just come up with a battle plan before you start the clean install, have all your programs ready, including serial numbers for downloaded stuff. If possible, which you should have done before, make an image file of your OS boot drive, so you can easily revert to your previous version.

So before doing a clean install you might want to disable anything that is a start up program, and reboot a couple times afterwards. It fixed the herd of turtles effect for me anyways.

I saw your thread. I don't have any creative drivers though. I did upgrade my soundmax drivers but it didn't help.

Wow, I have only 4 gigs of memory and everything opens up instantly with W7 64 bit for me, go figure.

It wasn't the drivers though, just the creative software suite that was running at start-up. I would see what is running at start-up and disable, if anything is running.

Nothing else helped much. Even setting affinity and priority higher for programs did little.

You may have to go the fresh install route suggested. I would install stuff one at a time, and make certain everything runs OK. If you hit the turtle effect, you will have it narrowed down to what causes it that way.

Ditto, my clean install of Win 7 Pro is fast and reliable. The problem is not Win 7, it was your choice of an install method as previously stated, fortunately you can recover using the above suggestions. Our Anandtech guys come thru again.

I performed an upgrade in my laptop, and it was much much much better than expected. It is every bit as snappy as my desktop, which was clean install.

As the others suggested, you might have a nasty driver or startup program issue.

OK. When I have time, I'm going to have to do a clean install.

This is really ridiculous. If I'm in Word and I just mouse click from one word to another, I get the busy icon and a Not Responding. I can't even scroll without it lagging.

I think I might have gotten my PC to speed up again somewhat.

I read somewhere that Realtek audio drivers may need to be reinstalled so I tried that. I think that was a major source of my issues. My PC is definitely faster than before but still not as fast as Vista.

Besides that, I optimized as much as I could using Windows 7 Manager. Still a little slow but I'll keep trying.

I noticed mine can be a little less than snappy when I first boot, and the background stuff is running, and it seems to be caching stuff for me. After that it is smooth sailing.

download Process Explorer and run it and see what's eating your CPU.

And Realtek official audio driver sometimes really causes problem. I experienced the same slow down problem multiple times before with Realtek driver.

If you can avoid it, just use Windows built-in driver.

Did you install any third party software or drivers right after the clean install?

It might be worth running Memtest86+ to check your ram,btw I have done two upgrades from Vista x64 to Win7 x64 with no issues(rare Win7 OS upgrade would cause an issue since Win7 has a good upgrade compatibiity check) ,I know you did a clean install after so obviously its something else.

I still bet there's an underlying driver problem somewhere. A fresh install, instead of an upgrade, will probably give you better results. The three Win 7 installs I've done at home have all resulted in much quicker system response on each system as compared to what was installed previously; XP Pro on two of them, Vista Ultimate 64 on the other.

As for the Experience being down at 5.9 due to your hard drives, that is pretty much par for the course, even with a RAID setup. Seems Win 7 won't give any more than 5.9 for any hard drives that are mechanical based....want a faster Experience score for hard drives, buy an SSD. About the only way to up that score.

My "faster" system has 7.5 for the cpu, 7.9 for RAM, 7.7 for the two gpu scores and a 5.9 for the hard drive, despite that it's a Raptor. And no one I've heard from has managed to better 5.9 in that respect with any mechanical-based hd, RAID or not.

It is very tempting to ridicule those who don't know, but I think the lesson to be learned here is always clean install an OS even if you only have 10 minutes left to live. It will save the person who inherits your crappy computer a lot less heartache

That is the problem with upgrading. A successful upgrade relies too much on what you have installed before the upgrade. Even with identical hardware one person may upgrade fine while the other causes problems.

Well, I had a shitload installed before the update, and have installed much since. The only thing that it said it may conflict with was Daemon Tools (IIRC), which I hated anyways.
