Windows 7 says DVD is wrong region and will not play

I can play a DVD with the media player classic but not wmp. It says it is the wrong region. I live in the USA and in the device manager it says region 1 for the DVD player.
 
I'd imagine since Windows 7 is a beta OS, Microsoft hasn't paid the licensing fees for it to play dvds.

If that were the case one would think you'd get a codec error, not a region error.
 
silly question. is this a retail DVD or is this a backed up/burned DVD? It does make a differance in a specific situation such as this. If you did not choose to rip the dvd using region free then that may be causing the issue. I may be way off base but its just a thought.

If you don't choose regionfree and then choose one other than the one you're in or the one on the DVD you deserve what you get.

Windows 7 RC definitely plays DVDs using the built-in Windows Media Player.

Why? The default for just about every DVD ripping and/or burning app is region free, if you change the default and choose a region other than the one you're in you do deserve it.

Wel........... I feel stupid....... I rebooted and it went away. Now it is fine. Every once in a while it does come up though. This is a retail dvd.
