Windows 7 Running Slow

Dell Studio 540
Intel Core 2 Quad 8200
8GB DDR2 SDRAM 800MHZ
2x 640GB Hard drive Raid 0
256MB ATI Radeon HD 3450 Supporting HDMI

I downloaded the chipset driver from the dell website.
I downloaded the latest ATI drivers.

I installed Windows 7 on this system and I cannot figure out why it's slow. It's not necessarily slowness, but it just like hangs for a second here and there. If I'm watching youtube the video pauses for a split second, sometimes viewing websites it takes a second to go to the next page after I click it. It's just got a slow response time. I never had any problems in Vista, am thinking I should just go back. Does anyone know what it could be? Even when typing this, I type faster than it responds sometimes.

I'm absolutely not sure what to do.

Maybe windows defender, windows update, or the backup is running in the background? Try more up to date drivers from the manufactures site (from ATI website/intel website not Dell)?

Also did you do an upgrade from Vista or a clean install? Maybe a clean install would be better if you didn't do that?

Maybe try this http://paul.jurco.ro/2009/01/0...nt-page-1/#comment-585 seems like a long shot though. I would just try to end task on the process first before disabling it completely to see if it works.

I did a clean install.

I hate to say, I'm really not sure what Intel drivers that I would need. I updated to the latest ATI driver, but I can only think it could possibly be an intel driver? I don't believe anything is running in the background.

Also what BIOS version are you running, on the Dell website from the 1.1.1 version BIOS in the changelog it says

Systems: Dell Studio 540/540s
Version: 1.1.1
Build Date: 07/27/2009

Fixes/Enhancements:
1.added enhancement for Win7 support.

Not sure what enhancements, but you can give a new bios a try. I think there is also a newer 1.1.3 try that one.

I already tried the latest bios 1.1.3.. no help :(.

I'm trying to look up what chipset the Studio 540 uses, hopefully Intel has some better drivers.

Edit: I can't figure out how to find out what chipset it uses. Does anyone know? I search and can't find it.

Thanks all, if I can't get this working soon, I'll probably just go back to vista.

Download CPU-z and go to the Mainboard tab. There's a section called Chipset there. Grab drivers for that from the link by ImDonly1.

G33, P35, X38 are 3-series. P45, X48 are 4-series. 945, 965 are 900 series. You get the idea :)

Check task manager too.

You have got something that is using cpu time.
Download process hacker here:
http://processhacker.sourceforge.net/

Then go to tools, hidden processes, click scan. Close any program listed that you don't need until you find the problem.
To close a program click on it and pick terminate.

You can also use the network tab in process hacker to see what programs are using the network and what they are connecting to if you suspect spyware.

I installed CPU-Z and the Intel chipset drivers, doesn't seem to help.

I tried processhacker, but cannot find the tools hidden processes button. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. All I can say is I'm unsatisfied with Windows 7 so far.

Go to taskmgr, and find what your processor load is at (what should be) idle

Processor load is absolutely fine. It's not really using up any resources.

A weird thing is what when I restart it's fine for a while, for like an hour and then slows down. Memory doesn't seem to be leaking though.

I am going to try changing the video card.

I can't believe you replied to the first person that you don't have any antivirus software . . . and the next TWELVE people didn't notice it!!!

The last thing I read said that an unprotected system will be infected within 10 minutes of going online . . . and you have been online more than that just answering things in this thread.

Priority: Get some security software on that thing and get it cleaned up (AVG Free 8.5 and Malwarebytes Antimalware is a good start), and then you will have eliminated the most obvious possibility.

Once you start to get that part under control, we will be able to give you more and better helps.
