Windows 7 Retail

Hi all,

Just a little advise please. I've been trying Windows 7 for a while now and I'm thinking about buying myself a full retail version for my system. The thing is that I'll be changing this system over to a new i9 build when they become available so I would like to know beforehand... Is it ok with retail versions to swap them over between systems as and when you upgrade?

You'll be fine. If you run into any activation problems they'll make you call and then you can explain you uninstalled it from one computer and are installing it into a new one.
 
Ok thank you.. So just so I understand it right.. OEM versions can NOT be transfered between systems, but it's fine to swap a retail version between systems even if the likes of the motherboard, CPU etc have been changed over/upgraded a few times?

Technically OEM versions can't be swapped but I've never had trouble with MS, their call-in center is extremely fast and helpful (at least here in NZ it is). It literally takes less than 4 minutes to get your key activated on a new machine.

Yea, they've always been good with me also. I've always taken a more liberal approach with oem than their EULA states. I consider a new socket type to be a new computer, and I then buy a new copy of Windows. I switched MBs on my old socket 478 system, and kept the same Windows copy. When I went to socket 775 I bought a new copy of Windows even though many of the components were the same.

Retail you can install on anything want, as many times as you want(but only 1 machine at a time). Oem is tied to the mb, but MS has been very accommodating in the past. Past performance is no indication of the future. They could lock it down at any time, but I doubt they will.
 
Thanks fellas for clearing that up. Just one more thing if I may please before I go and order my shiny new OS. I have been having problems with the Windows 7 version I'm using at the moment as it has been... Hmmm, how shall I say... tested beyond it's 30 day trial for a few weeks via a loader tool (yes I'm sorry and im going to rectify that.) Now ever since I've used this version of windows (RTM version) I've been having trouble with crashes...e.g. Media Center "media center has stopped responding" Race driver GRID "grid has stopped responding" etc etc.. I'm know the system is stable as it'll run linX and IBT for hours, so Is it likely that the OS I've been using has been damaged or corrupted it in some way due to the fix being used on it?

You don't have to. I was asking a question in the hope of some reasurance in that buying a new £180 piece of software might just rectify a problem I was having. I went out and bought my full retail copy of Win 7 Ultimate this morning, one problem though.. I still have the same issue with Media Center 🙁 I guess now I've answered my own question.

I've been using Windows 7 MC on my machine for 2+ months without any issues. Used exclusively as a HTPC so a lot of media center use.
