Windows 7 RC out to public now

Don't really notice anything different from the first Beta but don't see how they could change it much since it's all Vista based anways. Little things are different but nothnig major. Still don't see a reason to get W7 if you have Vista unless you need the latest and greatest. Vista does everything fine and have had no problems.

Do I always have to burn 64 bit OS to CD when I am in Xp 32? I keep getting errors when I try running the .iso using daemon tools...Also its not booting properly from CD..probably just a bad burn right? How to correct that because I'm burning on 8x speeds..not too fast or too slow.

Question, does newer OS's like this come with built in SATA drivers? I have a Abit NF7-S box I built years ago, and would love to re-install XP Pro on it, but something on the board related to the FD does not work (I've replace drives and cables many times) so I cannot load the SATA drivers during XP install. So its running a 6yr old XP load....lol

If this Win7 RC came with those drivers built in, then it would be a non issue. (Optical drives work fine)

XP - probably not unless it's an OEM DVD with SP3.

Win7 - I would assume so - most of the people report that it contains nearly all of the drivers you'll need to install the OS.

You're trying to mount the 64 bit version using Daemon tools why?

I think you need to burn the iso to dvd and then perform a clean install on a different hard drive..

No, I know XP doesn't. I wanted to make sure that Win 7 (and I assume Vista) had Sata drivers built in before I downloaded and installed it, since with no working FD, I can't go back to XP. I have 2 Sata drives (4 HD's total) that I have to have working.

Once I build a new box this Summer, this one will go to the kids and I'll remove the SATA drives and then can install anything on it for them.

Just because what I am trying to do is just test drive windows 7 on a 20GB partition on my 160GB HD. If I really like it after a few weeks, then Ill reformat my entire HD and then just use the windows 7 version. For some reason though my computer isn't liking the x64 disk, I am assuming its bad burns, but I don't wanna keep wasting dvd's.

Yes on the SATA drivers. If you want your RAID controller to work, you may still have to have the drivers ready on a CD/DVD, USB key or floppy depending on chipset and mainboard manufacturer.

I run the 64-bit version, since I already have XP 32-bits on the machine I don't see the need for another. if i install win7 rc now, when it expires and i go buy a copy of final version do i have to reinstall or just change the product key?

i want to try win 7 now to becoz of the ssd trim command and some performance gain stated by other win7 users.

I would think that you would just have to enter a new key. It's probably documented somewhere.

Unless there is a major update they decide to do (hopefully one that's a service pack, and not a reinstall).

MS specifically states you have to do a clean install with the final product. I assume some enterprising individuals will come up with a work around but officially speaking you cannot go RC -> Retail without a clean install.

thanks for the reply, well then i just wait for the final version then i hate to install windows and set up everything and install programs and games and tune stuff and play around the settings of each software again.

You need the 64-bit version if you plan to use more the 3GB of ram.

What do you mean by calling home constantly? It seems to call home about the same as XP or Vista.

I might need a new firewall then. What are you using?

I agree with you on the performance. I was running Vista x64 on this pc, and I think Win7 is about the same as far as speed and function goes.

One thing I don't like at all on Win 7, is the look of the taskbar and the icons there. But it can be changed, yes? :S

I went home last night to work on the Win 7 laptop some more. I put in a DVD, so I could multitask. Turns out, Win 7 doesn't recognize the internal speaker on my laptop. There was absolutely nothing I could do to get it running.

Uninstalled Win 7, reinstalled Vista and now the speaker works fine.

I guess that's the end of my Win 7 trial. There's no way I'm chancing it on my desktop.
