I'm currently running Vista 64 Ultimate.
So i'd rather wait until i have time to do a "clean" Win 7 install.

I would be careful with upgrade installs.

My lappy has a 100GB HDD split into three partitions: 4GB recovery, 80GB primary, and 16GB storage for drive images

It was running a pre-7057 Windows 7 when I chose to do an upgrade install. The upgrade worked, but it killed ALL of my partitions and now I've just got one 100GB partition. No more backup images on the 16GB partition and no more 4GB recovery partition. Wicked stuff.

I did a clean install on my desktop and it's working great.

Yeah, you've gotta be careful. There's no guarantee the upgrade will even complete properly, and then youre completely SOL.

Very peppy, stable, user friendly, and relatively bug free despite all the crap I've thrown at it. I like it a lot more than Vista. So now I'm nuking my desktop Vista install and just moving onto Windows 7. Here's hoping the migration of my desktop is just as painless as with my laptop.

It still doesn't feel as robust as Vista to me. W7 is good but still needs some work obviously.

I just loaded 7068 x64 on my home machine.. but my work machine will stay on 7057... I don't like to mess with that stuff when I have things working nicely. I may try a vhd install for kicks..

W7 has been remarkably stable for me at home and at work... I haven't had any compatibility issues with any of my software... vmware, citrix, livemeeting, etc. The worst problem I've had at work was an occasional video driver issue.. less than once a week. Smooth sailing :)

Alright, I've really gotta recommend against these intermin builds. Theyre simply not as polished as the beta, and were never meant for public consumption. Since moving to 7057 from beta 1:

Firefox now crashes regularly.

Explorer crashes have gone way up.

Fallout 3 still doesnt work. :(

My desktop sends wacky video signals to my monitor, with the monitor saying its out of range and I'm forced to reboot.

My fingerprint reader doesnt work on resume.

On my HTPC, my USB keyboard doesnt work on resume. Game controller software doesnt recognize the controller (even though its working in control panel and games).

And the upgrade completely failed on my laptop, getting stuck in a "windows is preparing to start for the first time" cycle, which forced a complete reformat.

And all that for what over Beta 1? I cant tell. Its basically the same thing, which isnt surprising.

So dont bother on any of your main PCs until the RC comes out. Theres very little to see here, and its hardly been worth the headache. I'm going to roll all my PCs back to beta 1.

Did you do upgrade installs from Beta 1 ?

I never recommend doing upgrade installs with beta OS. Not from Vista or other betas. Simply because it usually causes problems.

Yeah, I always went with the same policy, but there were enough people in this thread recommending it that I thought I'd give it a try. Bad idea.

Even still, I'd wait for RC.

Installed 7068 64bit a few days ago.
Up and running flawless, its definately better / faster than the original beta release i had installed when it first came out.

Im not ready to delete my Acronis image of Vista 64 yet, since this isnt a final release.
But if 7068 runs this flawless until release and i find no incompatabilities i can live with until its final, i may never get around to restoring that Vista 64 image.

Only program i've had not run so far was Daemon tools (they dont support beta OS's).
So i'll just have to find another way to mount my images.
Other than that, so far so good/great.

Although i havent installed any games yet.

I just tried to install the 64-bit version in a VM. It says I'm trying to install a 64-bit OS on a processor that's not 64-bit. But I'm running 64-bit Vista.

I'm new to VM so I'm wondering if I'm missing a step or setup criteria.

I've installed Microsoft Virtual PC, so I'm wondering if there is any advice to be gotten here. I never see it mentioned so I'm thinking that's not what everyone else is using.

I do have the 64 key obtained from MS back in early January but not the software which I seem unable to locate anymore.
Is there anyone can point out a free window 7 download without being a member of some technet org?

I dont see a lot of diff from 7057 and 7068 except a few pictures/wallpapers and the desktop.ini bug fixed (the bug there is a manual fix for).
Personally I dont see the need to reinstall to get 7068 over 7057.

Anyone know if they resolved the Power/Sleep issues in 7068 that are present in 7057?

hrm...I installed 7068 on an extra MSI Wind desktop (single core atom) and all the usb ports are running as low-speed. It's generally pretty pokey as well. Coworker has 7000 on his Wind netbook and it's quite snappy. Both are 945 chipset...very little hardware differences between the 2. hmmm....

Upgraded from 7000 version, took just over 2 hours to do the upgrade(even with live net connection) no problems so far to report except driver issue with my 9700 card, still no 1680x1050 native res in analogue mode(think its more ATi driver issue then Win7).

Is there any proof it's RC1? People keep claiming that various W7 builds are RC1, and they keep turning out to not be.

Right now it isn't definite that the build number is 7077, but people are pretty sure that it will be released in the next few days.

The previous builds were in the RC tree they were just not milestone.

It seemed like MS was saying in their release notes that are posted in the OP's opening post, that this was the RC1. Did i missread that?
