Windows 7 PC cold boot problem. Weird

I built this particular PC a couple of years ago, pretty standard build nothing crazy. About six months ago, a strange thing started happening.

Every time I boot from a cold boot (i.e. its been off for more than an hour) it freezes right at the Windows 7 logo (right after post and stuff). I then hit the reset button, it starts up again and prompts me with "your pc didnt start correctly last time would you like to try windows startup repair..." or "start windows normally."

If i pick start normally, it goes into windows and works just fine, even if I reboot manually. (It has never froze a second time after the initial boot)

Tried the startup repair option also, and after it goes through it for an hour or so, it comes up with nothing.

To clarify. This happens EVERY TIME i boot it from a cold boot. No exceptions.

Any ideas what it could be??

I'm having the same problem. Thought I'd open a new thread because it was so strange and found your post. In my case it is not every time I boot it.

I've had this build runnig very stable for 5 months, before that it was a bloody mess with very strange problems. My config is i7-860,Corsair H50, 4GB Mushkin daredevil, GIGABYTE P55-UD3R, 5850, WD 1TB, Windows 7 64-bit and most importantly Seasonic S12D. I think it is a very good PSU, it worked for only 8 months.

It does look like a psu issue if it wouldn't boot every time/randomly, but booting it cold changes my perspective. My thoughts are: either it is a problem with my watercooling kit and ~5°C, or the hard drive which for some reason won't keep working (didnt hear it working and the HDD lamp is always on).
In my case cold boot can be taken literally.

Hopefully someone can offer insight on this problem, suggestions or links. Any help is appreciated.

I would say that maybe is a driver related problem. As you said you tried repairing and nothing changed. It can also be something with WIndows registry. Try a tool like tune up utilities to check for software related problems. If that don't work check also your memory with a memtest to ensure that it is ok.

my htpc has been doing this for weeks now. i leave for work, the house temp goes down to about 55deg, and when i get home and turn on my pc it WILL NOT boot. it crashes and resets during the windows logo... and it will do that a couple times before it finally boots just fine.

in my case its probably something that just doesnt like to be off and cold. once i start it up and it warms up a bit, its fine. to me this points to a mechanical problem... which i cant think of much else other then the harddrive. ill probably just let it go until it totally breaks though.

I have the same problem with mine. when its been turned off for a while i get the one beep and it will freeze on my asus screen and i have to let it warm up a little then i can turn it off and back on and it loads ups fine i have tried the tune up utilities i have updated the bios ck the ram and hdd still no luck.

Was anyone able to find out what is going on.

Abit IP35-E used to have this problem, something to do with a transistor being cold or something. Also there have been reported problems with cold boots with certain Gskill DDR3. Other than that, I don't have many suggestions.

odd why it would start happening now my build is almost 3 years old. And i have ddr2 800. Oh well i guess i will have to wait till it wont boot at all and start from there lol hopefully it will last a few more months until i start my new build. Thanks Larry for your input.

Interesting, I beleive I have G.Skill DDR3 ram. Gonna have to open it up and check.

does it boot ok if you try a cold boot into windows safe mode? To rule out a software issue

Otherwise..
1) try upgrading or reinstalling the CHIPSET drivers
2) if you have multiple sticks of ram.. try a cold boot with just one stick ...
3) see if there is a bios upgrade available for your board..

I think i found the problem. And everything is up to-date. Last night couldnt get my pc to post. So i pulled 2 memory sticks out and reset coms and it fired right up on a cold boot. I have 2 sticks that are dead wont even let me run memtest86 if any of those sticks are in either paired with working ones or alone it wont post. Not sure if its a sign of ram about to go bad or just a fluke but now i can cold boot on the first try. I have moved the working ram in every configuration possible and still works fine. I'm going to let it sit even longer and see what happens. I will post back in a few hours with the results.

Oh and MLC could never get to safe mode it never mad it that far. I would just get my one beep and it would freeze on my asus screen (where u are able to choose bios etc.) but you couldnt get anything to work and had to shut down and start all over and it usually took me about 4 restarts for it to start working. So like i said idk if that is what everyone else is talking about or not but for me it looks like it was bad ram.

Well so far so good it booted up on first shot after being off for hours so for my problem it was ram starting to go bad. you guys should really ck your ram or test with some others and see what happens.
