Building a new pc for a friend. I was thinking of going with the Release condidate that just came out for Windows 7. Then get retail when it comes out. I kinda do not want to goto Vista for him with Win 7 coming out soon.

He is going to use the pc for the following.

Check mail
Open Office
Surf Web
Play WoW

Thats about it. The build is a P45 chipset with a 6600cpu and Radeon 4850.

Good idea to go with Windows 7 or buy Vista?

thanks,

I would, and i do play games and so far everthing has run great on windows 7.

I admit, i dont play WOW though, so hopefully someone will post and let ya know if theres any issues with WOW and Win 7.

And i kinda remember someone posting in the games forum he was having issues with Win 7 and Fallout 3, i havent re-installed Fallout 3 to try it yet and see if it was just an isolated issue with his setup or if its every Fallout 3 / Win 7 issue.

But as far as the rest its been rock stable and i am impressed.

I can list all the games i HAVE played on win7 if you want.
Just let me know if you need that info.

Keep in mind that Microsoft has stated in the FAQ that you will have to reinstall when the final version comes out:

Microsoft
When you install the final version of Windows 7, you'll need to do a clean installation. So plan on backing up your data then reinstalling your applications and restoring your data.

I'm not trying to discourage you, but you should plan ahead for the inevitable.

Hey all thanks for the replies.

We are planning on wiping and installing fresh when Win 7 goes retail.

Ill search around little on the web about win 7 and Wow.

Looks like this is the way to go so far.

Regarding Warcraft: It runs fine on 7 (x64). AAMOF, it even runs fine on 7 when you haven't even bothered to install it. But rather set up a shortcut to the copy already installed on your Vista (64) drive. <whistles innocently>

I did have a strange issue with Ventrilo where it refused to connect to certain servers. It would sit on 'contacting' forever for some, but immediately connect to others. I solved it by posting a ventrilo link for the particular site and clicking on that to start. I have no idea why typing in the exact same information wouldn't work, or why the issue was with one server and not another... Once I did that, the problem server connects every time via the usual dropdown list.
