Windows 7 just saved my ass

Barfo

Lifer
I was working as usual and windows asks to install some critical patch or something and as usual I give permission, I keep happily working while the update installs in the background, then it finishes and asks for a reboot, as usual, I close the window.

Then, 10 minutes or so later, I get another prompt to either reboot or ignore for x amount of time, I set it to 4 hours and click ok, or so I thought because in mere fractions of a second program windows start disappearing left and right and I suddenly realize I clicked the reboot now button instead of the postpone button FML!!!!!! so I prepare myself to try and click yes on all the unsaved documents I have open when the screen goes dark like in Vista's UAC and the system is telling it can't shut off because some programs are still open so I cancel the whole thing and save my documents.
This is a really nice feature to have, perhaps it's been there since win 3.1, but I think I had never clicked on the wrong button before (yeah I'm that precise), so right now I'm in love with Microsoft

I have vowed to buy a copy of the most bloated edition of Win 7 and the next Office too, even though I don't need it 😀

That feature has saved me in more than just Windows 7. Though Win 7 does have some more polish in other areas than Vista, XP, and prior generations of Windows.

I'm running windows 7 right now too, and I like it more than vista. I don't know why, but I still like xp more. But windows 7 is definitely an improvement over vista.

I believe that exists in Vista as well. It will bring up a box if something is causing the shutdown/restart to hang.

Eh, I've had Windows Update auto reboot on me while I'm working on something, not even giving me a chance to save or cancel. I've disabled windows update every since.

The evil side of Windows.
"You're restarting now whether you like it or not. Hahahahaha!"

They need an option to get rid of all the crap that saves you from screwing up the system. The new lesser UAC options are a step in the right direction, but they still need a single option that lets you be able to have full control of all the files on your hard drive.
There are many files that you can take ownership and set your user to have full control, but you still can't delete the files. FUCK THAT!

Yeah, that pisses me off to no end. I don't need a babysitter for my computer, jsut normal file management.

Vista defintely has this feature.

I think XP also does to some extent. When XP tries to close Office after you tell Windows to restart, the office auto prompt will ask you to save before closing.

If it didn't semi-force these damn updates in the first place, this would be moot.

You can disable that. I just tell it to prompt me for new updates but not download them.

Vista will do that to. For example, if I have an unsaved document open in Word, the save dialog box will cause Word to not close and the option to cancel the shutdown or force-quit the program to come up.

Vista's Previous Versions has saved me a few times, too. It's the most useful feature that isn't included in Home Premium for me.

You can turn UAC off completely, and run XP administrator style if you want. But it's a stupid thing to do. UAC is there for a reason, and it takes literally a second to click OK. But it's your rig.
