Windows 7 is now the official name

Gotta say I like the name Windows 7 as well. Clean and simple, I just hope the continue to use numbers for some time, it'd be annoying if they just kept moving around their naming scheme...

Windows NT 3
Windows NT 4
Windows 2000
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7

No continuity whatsoever, so I truly hope they continue the numbers.

Windows 7 is a fine name, I just think its rather odd the version number is going to be 6.1. Theyre going to have to call Windows 7.0 "Windows 8" if they want to bring it back to numbers.

The main thing I took away from that article is that MS has absolutely no idea how to properly count or name their products.

Naming it with a "Year" always seemed like an especially bad idea, given MS' traditional schedule slips. I don't know why MS is sticking with "Server 2008", either.

But what will happen with Windows 13? And Windows 69? Will that one suck?

Anybody have any idea when Windows 8 is due?..I'm really looking forward to that more then Windows 7 which I'll probably pass over.

I hope you are joking.....this WPF conversion is already killing me- I've got 2 dozen apps to re-write before windows 7.

Yeah 7 is "lame," eh? Yeah, they should follow Ubuntu's lead and call it Wacky Wallflower, or Xylophone Xenomorph, or Yodeling Yodleberger, because that's really sensible and professional sounding.

I was actually being serious 🙂,Windows 7 from what I and many users have read is really Vista SP2 with touchscreen,Windows 8 is supposed to be 64 bit only and complete new OS.

Windows 7 is the last OS to be offered in 32 bit format from what I have read, personally its going to have to be a big improvement over Vista for me to upgrade, that's why I'm seriously waiting for Windows 8 which will be a whole new OS and ballgame.

Ha. You KNOW you are going to upgrade to W7. Admit it! Somebody who's been running Vista 64 for as long as you have will never be able to resist a shiny new OS. 😉

No,the features are quite extensive compared to vista- improved UAC, Profile Based UI settings, Standard Office 2007 interface, more API's, improved multi-threaded task optimization based on .NET 4.0, integrated Live services, IE 8, touch, speech, biometric authentication, codec manager, tabbed windows, built-in Games for Windows update downloader and many other unknown stuff.

HUH? Thats 6, and 2 versions of the SAME OS isnt what they meant...

Windows 3.1
Windows 95
Windows 98
(Windows ME?)
Windows 2000
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7

Its technically 8, but, honestly ME was another flavor of 98, and i think Microsoft will deny ever having released ME if they know whats good for them, maybe pass it off as some copycat OS that was released by a third party and ripped off windows 98, only more poorly written...

Actually those are codenames, the versions made up of the month and year of release. For example, the release coming out this month is 8.10. For someone who can actually stick to a release schedule they work out pretty well.

Point taken.

What happened to Windows 1.x and 2.x? There were major changes between 2.x and 3.x, with Protected Mode. The changes were probably bigger than the changes between 95/98/ME or 2000/XP.

If you looked at MAJOR changes, I'd say they are:
Windows 1.x-2.x
Windows 3.x
Windows 95
Windows NT
Windows 2000
Windows Vista

lol

I wrote that post so quickly I didn't even notice that. Damn I feel dumb. XD

Edit:
Actual list is:

Windows 1.0
Windows 2.0
Windows 3.0
Windows 95
Windows 2000
Windows Vista
Windows 7

Edit:2
Forgot this.

Well, hey, they wanted to keep up compatibility. I'm not going to complain as its just a number and they could just as easily make fewer changes than they are making and call the version number 7.0.

Edit:
Spelling...

omg... windows 7... are you saying that if microsoft keep the number naming scheme.. in the year 2786 we are going to have Windows 359???
