Naming it with a "Year" always seemed like an especially bad idea, given MS' traditional schedule slips. I don't know why MS is sticking with "Server 2008", either.Originally posted by: Nothinman
The main thing I took away from that article is that MS has absolutely no idea how to properly count or name their products.

Anybody have any idea when Windows 8 is due?..I'm really looking forward to that more then Windows 7 which I'll probably pass over.

I hope you are joking.....this WPF conversion is already killing me- I've got 2 dozen apps to re-write before windows 7.
Ha. You KNOW you are going to upgrade to W7. Admit it! Somebody who's been running Vista 64 for as long as you have will never be able to resist a shiny new OS. 😉Originally posted by: Mem

I was actually being serious 🙂,Windows 7 from what I and many users have read is really Vista SP2 with touchscreen,Windows 8 is supposed to be 64 bit only and complete new OS.
Windows 7 is the last OS to be offered in 32 bit format from what I have read, personally its going to have to be a big improvement over Vista for me to upgrade, that's why I'm seriously waiting for Windows 8 which will be a whole new OS and ballgame.

Gotta say I like the name Windows 7 as well. Clean and simple, I just hope the continue to use numbers for some time, it'd be annoying if they just kept moving around their naming scheme...
Windows NT 3
Windows NT 4
Windows 2000
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7
No continuity whatsoever, so I truly hope they continue the numbers.
Yeah 7 is "lame," eh? Yeah, they should follow Ubuntu's lead and call it Wacky Wallflower, or Xylophone Xenomorph, or Yodeling Yodleberger, because that's really sensible and professional sounding.

Actually those are codenames, the versions made up of the month and year of release. For example, the release coming out this month is 8.10. For someone who can actually stick to a release schedule they work out pretty well.
What happened to Windows 1.x and 2.x? There were major changes between 2.x and 3.x, with Protected Mode. The changes were probably bigger than the changes between 95/98/ME or 2000/XP.Originally posted by: Paperlantern

(Windows ME?)

lolHUH? Thats 6, and 2 versions of the SAME OS isnt what they meant...
Wow. That's what I expected. "Windows 7" will actually report itself as "Windows 6.1". Who would have guessed? 😛
