When it gets to the drive options screen, you can delete the partition, recreate, format and install. MediaBootInstall in the registry will be set at 1. You care free to format and it will still record that you were doing an upgrade (clean one!).

What you are saying is correct assuming you are using the same drive to install Win 7 on. I'm advocating the Registry hack method so you can install Win 7 on a new and different hard drive from where you have XP or Vista currently, particularly if your old OS is on a 250 or 500gb HD and you want more space going forward. I went from a 250bg HD to a 1TB drive so there was no previous OS on the new one for Win 7 to detect.

When I built my kid's machine on the other hand, I reused the HD that was there with XP on it and yes, blew away the prior contents with a Format during the install just as you describe above.

I think you might have misunderstood my post.

1) I am not saying your method is 'bad' in any way.
2) You can use Windows 7 own installation to be counted as the OS. So, you can take clean drives and do the following:

A) Install Windows 7 on your new blank drives, skip the product code activatation.
B) Reboot with the Windows 7 disc, run a new installation.
C) At the Drive Options screen in the setup, format your brand new OS install and continue with installation.
D) Your key will now work.

What I was trying to say is that you don't need the 'bloat' from the double install. You still need the double install, but you don't need the windows.old folders that come with it by not formatting it. The end result is a clean OS.

Just remember that, when you go to activate your family pack licenses on multiple computers, and you tell the activation line computer that it's on three computers, and it tells you activation fails, becuase that key is only licensed for ONE computer.

That's right people, the family pack is a SCAM. Read my thread in the OS forum.

Microsoft sells these as valid for three activations, but after that you have to call in. However, when you call in, the automated system thinks those keys are only valid for ONE computer, not three.

Ebay and search for staples coupons.They are stackable and you can get them for less then 3 bucks.
 
Do the Staples coupons off eBay stack? The ones I looked at say "not valid combined with other offers" etc.

It works for three automatic (online) activations. After that, you have to call in. And at that point, their automated computer-voice validation system considers Family Pack licenses to only be valid for ONE computer. Meaning, even though these are supposedly Retail Upgrade licenses, and can therefore be moved between machines, MS will shoot you down and refuse to activate, should you choose (or need, in the case of a mobo failure), to re-activate some or all of the computers on the Family Pack license.

Except that you called and were able to resolve the situation. Perhaps its just a temporary issue with online/automated activation system? Calling it a scam and claiming that MS will refuse to activate these copies is pure misinformation.

I have already had problems with a computer and had to reinstall after RMAing a motherboard, and I did not have this problem.
