Windows 7 (Final) vs. Vista SP2 VGA Performance

The fact that our performance is very similar now hopefully means that as time goes on driver companies are going to be able to really harness the power of Windows 7 and offer us even more performance than we see here today.

in other words, you are sheep, pay up for vista twice. the difference is so small that it rather represents statistical error.

In other words, you probably haven't extensively used Windows 7.

For both vista and 7...

Anyways its pretty though to justify the 7 upgrade. But benchmarks are not everything. I find 7 to run better... it seems its always ready to run not just sometimes.

Disagree. Nvidia WDM 1.1 drivers suck. Which basically means any nvidia windows 7 drivers. Sure you can use WDM 1.0 drivers but they are for Vista really. I know I know Vista drivers using in Windows 7 is ok but still. Have tried to get the latest nvidia drivers to work but everytime I have problems. It is not only me either. Not my pc or system because I have tired everything to fix it. Someone even online I think, but I am not spending anymore time with it sorry so not going to try it, figured out what in the latest nvidia drivers pass a certain point is causing all the problems for everyone. Not going to play the guessing game though. I will stay with the most stable drivers like everyone else is doing and hope for the best down the road if it ever happens. Worst comes to worst I will never upgrade the drivers pass this point.
 
Oh and you don't even have to tell me I know people are going to come back saying their windows 18x.xx/190.xx drivers are working just fine for them. I don't care because I don't believe them. That or they don't game much with their nvidia card.
 
I was not expecting a big difference to be honest,anyway be interesting to see how things develop with Win7 service pack down the road and newer drivers,not to meantion Win8 when it finally arrives.
 
The most important thing for me in Win 7 is if the nvlddmkm.sys problem is resolved. If not, Win 7 is garbage to me.

I can't comment on Nvidia drivers in Win7 but ATi drivers have been solid for me on both Win7 and Vista.

Ati/AMD is also plagued with a similar problem under vista, you're just lucky. I believe it's the atikmdag file with ATI. With win 7 you obviously get no gain, all you get is that it might get better with time, but let's face it, 2 service packs didn't make vista better. Plus, after sending hundreds of problem reports to microsoft about the nvlddmkm issue, there was no fix, no answer on the problem and not a clever solution proposed.

Why upgrade to win 7 now ? All that buzz about win 7 isn't justified, just a marketing trick. Wait and see is the best option.

Never had issues with ATI drivers in Vista x64 to be honest and I do a lot of beta and normal gaming,my other computer is a laptop that has Nvidia 8600GT m chip with Vista x86 and that has been ok as well.

Win7 is still very young so any driver problems you may have should be ironed out in a few months or so.
I disagree , Service packs did make Vista better,I think you find a lot of people will say SP1 was an improvement on Vista,to be honest Vista SP2 is very stable and only reason I'm going to upgrade to Win7 retail is because my OEM Vista does not cover motherboard upgrade,btw nvlddmkm issues should probably be directed at Nvidia not Microsoft,basically drivers are down to the manufacturer in question.


Only real issue I have with Win7 is HP driver for wireless printer,again its HP fault not Win7,I just have to wait for a Win7 driver to be released.

Believe me Nvidia is aware of the problem, plenty of threads about the issue on their forum. Every problem you get with the Vista OS is sent to microsoft with the problem and solution tool. I had this problem with vista for 2 years, I sent hundreds of those problems reports, if 10 000 persons did the same, do the math, and we still have the issue (even after a video card rma, a few format, and playing on countless driver versions).

 
Anyone expecting vastly different results between Win7 and Vista had unrealistic expectations. For the most part, Win7 is just a tweaked Vista. What has changed is the feel of the user interface (UI). While hard to quantify, Win7 just feels more slick and responsive.
 
I don't see how you guys have so many problems with drivers. The only time I've had the nvlddmkm.sys issue was with Mass Effect, and that was probably a result of the crappy port.

Also, Win7 will probably be good resource use wise. I've noticed my memory usage go as low as 750 or so, and the IT guys here at work say it makes our laptops run like they used to on XP.

It's not so much that it adds things you can't do in Vista. It just tweaks the overall experience and makes it more usable and intuitive. New features contribute to this, though they don't actually give me things I can't do in Vista. It just allows me to do them "better", faster, etc. You know, new taskbar, jump lists, aero peek, etc. There are other features and tweaks here and there, but tiny enough that you won't notice the slight improvement until it's used.

Applications and such may not perform any better, but the whole OS itself IS faster/snappier. It's not really something that can be shown by benchmarks (though it's proven than W7 uses less system resources than Vista). You just have to USE the OS for a while...then you realize it's definitely worth upgrading for. BTW, I'm the type of guy that strongly defends Vista and REALLY likes using it.

Oh...wait. I remember something I can do in Windows 7 that Vista can't. You can actually use the networking stuff properly (setting up wireless connections, network and sharing center, etc). It's basically broken in Vista.

Install a SSD with native Trim support. I can name a lot more if you like but I don't want to embarrass you any further.
 
For those of you having nvlddmkm or atikmdag errors, are you running multiple monitors? Try disconnecting a monitor or switching to Vista/7 Basic and see if those help.

I had tons of issues with atikmdag erroring, and for most of the posts I read it's caused by multiple monitors (not all the issues are, though. some are other things). My #2 monitor died so I can't test anymore, but I haven't seen even ONE atikmdag error without the extra monitor.
 
I got the nvl whatever it is driver error quite a bit when I was using Vista Ultimate x64 SP1. I am only using 1 monitor. I don't think I ever get it in Windows 7 or maybe like once I did.

Either way I like both Vista and Win 7.

Redundant software RAID.
Full system image backup in all versions of Win7 (only with Vista Business and Ultimate).
Much better control of System Restores.
Previous Versions (appear to be) available in all versions of W7 (only with Vista Business and Ultimate).

I have NEVER had any of those stability issues...or whatsoever driver/games problem people reporting..especially with nvidia drivers. I am also NOT always downloading the latest "leaked betas" from guru3d.

But 186.18 WHQL run great with my GTX.

I seriously, seriously think its not the driver but your system.

If 9999 people say it's raining..and you're the only one saying it's not raining...it looks a little ridiculous if you defend yourself then saying you must be right and you dont believe what other people say 🙂

i actually had that twice (in a couple months....)..so i'd rather say it's something more related to my overlock or whatever other rare circumstance. Hardly something i would use to diss a whole OS or drivers...because of a BSOD twice in two months 🙂
