I freshly reinstalled Windows 7 with Office and all the latest updates. The whole thing is taking a whooping 48GB on my SSD before I even migrated any data or installed any additional programs or games. What the hell is taking so much room? Any tips on reducing this install size? There isnt much room to wiggle with a 160GB SSD.

Bigger SSD. Fresh install 8.1 and Office around 35GB, not counting installed programs and user bits. On a 1TB SSD.

C: \Windows\Installer - make a symbolic link to that folder from another hard disk
disable hibernation
disable system restore
set page file on hard drive

A bare install should be around 20 GB.

With Office and a bunch of applications, you should still be well under 30.

How much space do you have devoted to System Restore? You should be able to keep it to no more than 5 GB or so.

How much space do you have devoted to your hibernation file? You can eliminate it entirely if you don't use hibernation.

How much space do you have devoted to your page file?

Run Disk Cleanup or CCleaner.

Did the install include SP1 or was that included with Windows Updates?

Disk cleanup can remove your Windows Update backup files, including the SP1 backup files.

Very good suggestions by other posters here as well.

The Windows install included SP1. I noticed that when installing security updates, Windows would create myriads of system restore points for each updates that would inflate the windows installation, although he biggest culprit was hibernation. Disabling it would give me back 12-14GB.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I got the whole thing back down to about 24GB now.
