Windows 7 clean install Question

After much preparation I am ready to do a clean upgrade install to W7. I have one what I hope is, last question. I am intending to re-install selectively from an external HDD although I also have Carbonite. The instructions say before starting W7 installation to disconnect any external USB devices which, of course is my external HDD. The directions do not tell me when I should re-connect the external HDD. When I do reconnect is the OS going to recognize the external HDD without any more to do? This is all new to me. Thanks in advance.
