Windows 7 Clean Install Error: windows/system32/config/system corrupt or missing

Basically title says it all. Installing windows 7 x64 professional on a machine (Ip-35e, Core 2 quad). nothing special. It was purchased from MS through their academic department, downloaded a copy, burnt it. Installed correctly, was in windows for maybe a day or two, then now upon bootup it says:

Windows 7 could not start, the following file is corrupt or missing:

windows/system32/config/system

put in disk to repair, etc. etc.

I put in a disk to repair, run the repair console, it looks for a problem and can't find any. I reinstall, no dice. I go and download 3 different ISO's (from legit sources) to see if it's an ISO problem, nope, same exact thing. Now it won't even go into Windows, it just says this right at the end of the install.

Any idea what's going on? Soudns like maybe it's a hardware problem, maybe something in the bios but I can't for the life of me figure it out.

Test RAM using memtest 86 http://www.memtest.org/ Take all sticks of memory out except 1 and test each 1 separately.
Maybe a bad hard drive. Try running chkdsk or a different hard drive.

Maybe it is something that is not compatible. I.e. some usb device like a printer. Unplug everything except mouse and keyboard. Take out any wireless G cards, etc.
