Assuming the games have a start menu shortcut, you'll need to ensure search is configured to index the start menu.

If the games don't have a start menu shortcut, you'll need to index the "games" directory. However, in that case, search won't be as effective as you'll be searching for filenames that won't necessarily match the game name.

Actually using the Games Explorer would be a better bet to search for all the installed games on a system.

To be honest, I'm having a hard time understanding what these "issues" are. It's not described in your original post, and others have responded to the points you have brought up later on.

But hey, I'm sure you can find someone to recreate the Windows 3.1 shell if you really want to go old school. ;)

It doesn't matter to me if you understand . I posted this for people that want the classic menu, not so people could tell why they think the win7 menu is superior and everyone should use it.

Making remarks that imply anyone not using what you use is incompetent or doesn't know any better is not something I tolerate and I will not respond to any further post that contain them.

At first I disliked the Win7 menu and inability to use the classic menu. But I have grown into it. My biggest gripe is the default doesnt include run and network on the menu. I use the run command like mad. Not the end of the world to configure it, but why it isnt on by default escapes me.

Because the search box works like run, just type into it and hit enter. Or if you really want you can hit Win+R and it'll bring up the old-style run dialog.

LOL am I the only one who puts the start menu on the top?
I'm a weirdo like you, but even weirder. I ONLY put my home system start menu at the top. My work system is always at the bottom. I have no idea why I started doing this.

I can understand some of modelworks points. I have seen graphic artists working, and some really do favor the mouse. I think most (many?) people work more with text so they are constantly typing something. From the typist perspective, the mouse isn't as important.

Now...if you could find something like the menu replacment in the OP, but with the auto-search functionality, that would be interesting.

+1

It is very sad, during the 12 years that I am online there is a clear shift from real exchanges about technology to ignorance, Upmanship, and other inappropriate nonsense.

This thread is good in providing description and info about variety of means used by different people.

What one is using is a personal preference and that is it.
If someone else does not like it, do not use the other method, and be done with.

Trying to convince others that one is using is the “best” does not make him/her smarter or superior, it just making them better in being socially obnoxious.

Fair point, though if a game doesn't have an entry in the start menu, it may not be in games explorer either.

Asking for an explanation is considered socially obnoxious? Really? From my perspective, some people in this thread are taking themselves a little too seriously.

But hey, whatever works for them :)

Nope - it makes sense as all other menus are at the top.

You don't have to browse through multiple menus. You can drag and drop and make your own menus like this
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/8638/workte.jpg

you can manually edit the folders as well by browsing to their location in windows. its what ive always done. ever since win 98 ive organized my start menu into 5 categories (Games, Internet, Misc, Programs, and Video) in 7 its 6 because i cant delete the startup folder without windows yelling at me. i would use a "classic" start menu replacement in 7 if they worked properly with dual monitors and ultra mon (they might work but they didn't used to)

everything i use frequently is launched out of object doc or has a mouse click item for "open with"

on the off chance i need something thats not on the dock i know right where it is. ive never used the search function in win 7s start menu,

Give this one a try . I use multiple monitors and it has worked without a problem. It is the most unobtrusive classic start menu software I have used. Really don't know it is installed it meshes with the OS so well.

Objectdock >>>> taskbar, OSX got it right, Stardock made a damn good clone of it. I don't remember the last time I used the default taskbar in Windows 7, but whatever floats ya boat.
