As interested as I am in trying this out and installing it on my new i7 system, apparently on March 1st of next year it will start shutting down every 2 hours unless upgraded. Just FYI.

well people who want to keep it will find a hack. other people will buy it. and some lucky souls will end with a free copy in some promotion.

I am downloading this now since Windows 7 is 10 billion times better than that POS Vista.

A full 10 billion times better? You are exaggerating. It can't be more than 7 billion times better.

I won't uninstall vista to install a beta OS on my main rig. I need my main rig 100% usable and stable.... But I downloaded it anyway, just in case I want to attempt it on another machine.

It's past beta.

Incidentally, the beta worked fine for me.

On my machine, 64-bit Win7 is more stable than 32-bit Vista Ultimate. Haven't run into a single problem, and have been running it several hours a day for the last week and a half.

I'm loving 7 so far. My only complaint would be the lack of drivers and software at this point, but that's not a huge problem as a) a lot of software and drivers built for Vista will work, b) 7 does a damn good job recognizing most hardware (even better than Vista), c) I'm sure drivers for other devices will come soon enough, and d) I can't expect the world considering it's still in pre-release stage. But the performance increase is real and the changes to the interface are very welcome. Win7 RC1 feels more streamlined and polished than Vista SP1 which has been out for MUCH longer.

Good riddance, Vista. You were flashy and new but you were a hog and littered with annoyances. Your big bro 7 promises to go a long way toward redeeming your faults. 🙂

I've been using the beta and now the RC as my primary OS since it came out. I kept my other vista drive for a couple months but never booted to it, but then I formatted it. I don't even notice its not a "finished" version.

If you were wanting to do a Windows 7 upgrade over a Windows 7 (the 1st beta i.e.7000)
there is a way even though M$ says not...

Got it, burnt it, installed it, found out my Netgear SC101 drivers would not work with this, there were no updated drivers for it, and noting in compatability mode woul make it work. Everything I have is on them damn things so, since this OS doesnt work with it, its useless for me right now and waster 3 hours 🙁

I hope they get a driver to work for it soon, really like to give this one a try.

AT's very own article explains differences between vista and 7 in detail; not a whole lot of differences between the two, and where the small changes and tweaks have been made, things are a tad better. So much for claiming it to be x100000 better than vista, the chances are you won't like it if you hated it compared to xp (i.e. 7 is much more akin to vista than anything else, obviously).

That being said, MS is taking a radically different approach with their beta/RC OS this time around. 7 is almost as polished as vista is at the moment, I have not noticed anything out of ordinary other than being forced to switch from daemon tools to virtual clone drive.
