Windows 7 bug - does not show "net use" shares in My Computer

I recently set up a VPN on my home router, so I could access my NAS remotely.
I tested it yesterday from an XP machine. I connected to the VPN fine. User runs as adminstrator. So I did a "net use" command, to map one of my NAS shares to a drive letter.
Just like that, a new drive letter popped up in Windows Explorer.

Today, I'm testing with a remote Win7 HP 32-bit SP1 machine. I connected the VPN, and Networks and Sharing Center says I'm connected to multiple networks. So is this what is called "split tunnelling"? I opened a command prompt with Run as Adminstrator, and did a "net use" command, and mapped a couple of drives. The command said that the drives are mapped, and I can do a DIR of them from the command prompt, but they don't show up in Windows Explorer. How do I get my net use drives to show up in Windows Explorer in Windows 7? It's frustrating that things that worked in XP, no longer work right in Windows 7. I find it hard to believe that this feature wasn't tested, as it seems like it would be a corporate staple.

Trying to type "Z:" or "Y:" into the Windows Explorer bar at the top, returns, "Z: not found". Simply typing "Y" opens up my default web browser, at http://y/.

Edit: Hmm, going into the command prompt, and typing "explorer.exe Z:" brought them up, strange.

Then why would opening an explorer window in the command prompt, make the drives visible in my (non-admin) Windows Explorer?

Maybe it elevated explorer or replaced the current instance with one running as admin, I'm not sure since Explorer is kind of a bastard child with regards to UAC. Unlike things like cmd you can't easily run multiple instances of it.

Try, after you're logged in to the vpn, ending the explorer.exe process and then relaunching it.

I'm curious to see if this is a user issue or maybe Explorer doesn't sense the mapped shares from the second network until it's relaunched.
