Windows 7 beta frustration

This Windows 7 uses a few lockdowns on the system folders that are simply frustrating. I like to retain my settings when I move software around and to do so I need to be able to copy into the program files folder. Unfortunately this is bunged up beyond comprehension in the beta. I've taken ownership, reset the attributes, chown'ed it. Still cannot copy directly over. And what does copy is only move & replace, no copying folders over that already are not there!

Does anyone in the beta have a solution?

This is said too late but never use betas as your main OS only for testing.

Make sure your copying from an elevated command prompt or explorer session. And if you have programs writing directly into program files, they are broken.

It's not my main machine, just an old slimline compaq I keep around for linux and windows betas. The 1ghz p3 and half gig of ram is plenty for windows 7, although it faired fine with the vista beta, too.

It doesn't seem to matter how I approach it, the changes are made to the files even after that. Its almost like the folders in this section of the install keep getting remarked with inheritance rights based upon some unseen defaults every few minutes. Keep removing them and within a couple of minutes they are back. Never saw that kind of behavior before. I wonder if they blanket reset rights every so many cycles.

are you trying to copy from a network location? copy it somewhere else locally then to program files

This should work from an elevated command prompt session. Also things like this is what VMWare thinapp was designed to eliminate.

So far I'm not seeing the big differences from how Vista works other than the obvious changes to the UAC front end. It still bugs the living shit out of me compared to XP. Microsoft seems to be run by programmers more intent with reinventing wheels than marketing a real improvement of an OS. I almost prefer Vista to win7 because of it being too much change once again.
