Windows 7 64bit + Gigabyte EP45-UD3R

I apologize if this should have gone in the mobo forum...

Finally getting around to installing W7 RTM on my main rig and getting all my drivers beforehand.

I noticed Gigabyte only has LAN and AUDIO drivers available for W7 64. Do I need the chipset drivers at all or will Windows Update handle it? I noticed Intel does have chipset drivers for RC available but nothing for RTM.

Thanks, just finished the install and everything works fine. Didn't bother with the Gigabyte Lan driver, just used what was installed.

Only issue is that the 2 Gigabyte/Micron Sata ports don't work. I use these for my esata drives but I'll just moves these to the Intel sata ports.

For the JMicron SATA ports, you'll just need the latest driver from JMicron. Although to be frank, you're probably better off not using that chip; the Intel ICH9 is a much better SATA controller.

Thanks for the link. I may just need those drivers. Having no luck getting the ICH9 to recognize esata drives at the moment.

Actually the UD3R has the IHC10 chipset, IIRC.

Surprised your having problems with that board and Windows 7, already installed Windows 7 x64 on that board twice over (had to change version :()

Only problem I'm having is getting esata drives recognized on the main Intel sata controller. From what I've seen on the net, this is common. From what I understand, this is an Intel issue, not a Windows one. I also wasn't able to get these drives working under Vista. After installing the Jmicron drivers, they work fine on those sata ports (worked fine under Vista also).

Everything else is perfect.

I've got the same board and my eSATA worked fine on my fresh install. And I have mine plugged into the Intel SATA ports also, never tried the other (purple??) ones.

BTW I didn't add any other chipset drivers other than what was installed in the initial W7 install.

Do your esata drives work when you power them up after your system is on? Mine don't for some reason. They do work when I turn on the enclosures before I power up my system. I can't hotswap them off tho. I need to shut down or disable the drives in device manager which is a pain when I have 6 external drives and 2 drive docks/enclosures.

The Gigabyte/Jmicron sata ports let me hotswap on/off without rebooting or messing with device manager.

I'll try and remember to double-check tonight after work. But I think I also have the issue that if I turn off the switch on the enclosure and then turn it back on (while still in windows) the drive doesn't show back up. I was just thinking from one of your posts that it wasn't working at all.

And I think I made a similar thread or at least replied in one that dealt with this and it was suggested to enable AHCI in BIOS. Of course (and you probably know this) this is something that is best done before installing windows. Although I have seen some registry workaround to where you can do this under Win7 after the OS has been installed.

Yep, I don't think I was clear at first. External esata drives do work, but only if I have them powered on prior to boot. Swapping external drives also requires a reboot. Basically I don't have hotswap on/off functionality with the Intel controller but this is supposed to be standard from everything I've read. I do have AHCI enabled in BIOS.

I really wish Intel would get around to improving this. Performance is so much better on the Intel controller as opposed to the Jmicron one. Unfortunately hotswapping works perfect on the Jmicron so I need to take the performance hit.

I too have this GA-EP45-UD3R board and found that a Win7-64 system could not access the system disk after a resume from standby if the system disk (a solid-state disk from OCZ, Model OCZSSD2-1VTXLE100G) was plugged into any of the Intel ICH10R SATA ports. This was in either IDE or ACHI mode and it also failed under the 32-bit version of Win7. All other disk operations off the ICH10R seemed fine. BIOS/firmware/drivers were the latest I could find. A regular HDD did not have the problem. I moved the SSD to a port on the Jmicron controller and the problem went away.That's how I'm happily running now.
