WINDOWS 64 BIT

okay so if im getting a processor and a Mobo that support 64 bit then is should i get 64 bit windows or just go with regular xp professional

I am doing a major upgrade from my crashed system. I'm moving up to an AMD opteron and was thinking of changing to Win64. After reading all the comments here and checking if my printer has 64 drivers available (they aren't) I decided against it. I think I will keep my money in my pocket. I even considered dual booting but it would be a real pain to reboot to do __________ .

I think I will wait til there is more drivers and I upgrade my printer. Hp says it has no intention to write drivers for my current model. They did have a work around but the card reader won't work.

I've been running xp64 for a while, but its the little annoyances that make me not like it. Certain older program's dont work, some programs that interact directly with windows and are compiled in 32 bit dont work (pGina for example). I'm going back to regular xp.

Windows XP x64 is my favorite version of Windows. It really depends on the software and hardware you are using. If all of your hardware has x64 drivers... especially your printer (mine does from Canon)... I would say go for it. Also, Make sure the software you use works with it. In x64, Microsoft dropped all 16bit support, which means no more legacy network protocols, or DOS support for programs. Other than that, I love it. Yo will start to see more and more applications and games get 64bit variants. For example, Half Life 2 just came out in 64bit last week.

However, if you don't want to deal with application and hardware compatibility, just get Windows XP Pro or Home. And remember, this time next year Vista should be out, so you won't be missing out on much.

Driver is the biggest issue for me so far! Can't get any driver for my modem and those people have no intention of releasing any drivers so soon 🙁 so can't activate windows

Why not spend $10 and get a different modem? Can you afford high speed (cable, dsl, etc.) internet?

I've tried one dial-up and two adsl modem, no driver for any of them, fed up looking...so gave up till 64bit is mainstream and drivers become available

🙁

Just bought Win XP Pro and will install it over x64. It was too much of a hassle trying to get everything to work.

I guess I'll wait a year until MS has the driver support and software to run x64.

Guess Win XP Pro is the only way to go for now.

I love XP-64, been using it for a few months now. Yes, there were driver / applications issues at first but most/all have been resolved for my system. You have to think of it this way, if no one uses it then the vendors have no urgency to support applications and drivers on it. Install XP-64, and if you run into problems contact the vendors. If they see a demand for 64-bit drivers then they are more likely to provide quicker support.
