Windows 2K or Windows XP

Got equipment for my next build.. read mechbgons newbie stuff, but its almost a coin flip.. It has been said that while XP gives you power windows versus manual for the old 2k, that it also puts those amusement park rider constraints on you that while not locked down yet, in the EULA, Microsoft reserves the right to lock you down and in..

But.. on the other side.. withouth XP.. many games, programs, peripheral devices just won't work or run at their best..

So.. Catch 22..

Given the trade offs, and some known hacks.. could XP work for a paranoid old buy who thinks of Microsoft as a "big brother", but also a person who does not want any other heirs in the house left when he is through.

If you really thought of him as big brother you would shun him and move on sparing us from YET ANOTHER ONE OF THESE POSTS.

Disable automatic updates and patch manually if it bothers you.

A third party firewall with outbound monitoring will also catch most other suspicious items trying to phone home.

!#$!#$

Go get Windows 95 already.

Anyone that can come up with some excuse to buy an almost seven year old OS should just go for gold and get the 11 year old one.

gee, for a forum that says it is to discuss Windows 2k or not Windows 2k there is a lot of hostility toward the old.

So.. if someone made you choose Windows XP with SP1, no updates, you are stuck with it as is or Windows 2k Pro with SP4, which one would you go for and why?

Dis or Dat! :D

I would pick XP, then when they weren't looking I would knock them unconscious and install SP2 and all updates. Because I'm used to XP, and don't especially want to become part of a botnet.

Have you ever given a valid reason against SP2 yet?

Seriously, do you think that if you keep posting these threads, that we'll just give up and tell you what you want to hear?

Either go with XP SP2, or buy a Mac. Or build a Linux box. Or attend a mental health seminar with Link19. Pretty much do anything besides posting this nonsense.

I might be paranoid, but I do want a computer I can work with and xp does work better with some applications i need to use.

Thanks for the input thus far.. so.. no one would go back six plus years and pick Windows 2000 even with all the like XP updates to get to Windows 2000 Pro with SP4??

SHUT UP PUNK! THERE IS NO HOSTILITY. I'LL BEAT YOU DOWN! WE LIKE PEOPLE WHO POST THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER WITHOUT USING SEARCH.

heh. j/k this question, pagefile questions drive the windows guys nuts. Although I don't participate in them I'm sure the repeated "which linux distro is right for me?" threads drive the *nix guys nuts too.

man, that's the most caps I've used in ages. That was fun.

Am I stuck in a time warp or something? You should have asked this question three years ago.

i smell meat...j/k

listen stain, there's a little feature on these forums called "search".

using said "search" could yield a wealth of "information" that you could possibly use to "choose" which "operating system" you wish you purchase.

With that said, stop downloading pirated copies of windows, "purchase" a copy of windows "xp" and patch it with "SP2".

give these guys a break from your repetitive questions. they are getting even more boring everytime, and all you'll end up doing it buying a ticket out of anandtech.

"good luck"

Thanks for the advice!

In regards to the beat downs, well I know that whoever has to beat someone down on-line has some serious PUNK in their hearts and I pay them no mind.

I kind of doubt a single one of those who would strive to beat me down would make a pimple on a good soldiers ass. I consider such beat downs a sign of weakness and a good indicator of cowardice.

There is no shame in asking for help, I am not a computer guy, I am just trying to learn.

Yea, they're pretty annoying. I like the fact that on Ars any 'which distro' threads are immediately locked and told to post in the one sticky 'which distro' thread.

What does a person who asks the same question over and over have in their heart? Follow the advice in your sig...Think Critically.
