Windows 2003

I would like to install Windows 2003 on my machine but I need to preserve its existing Windows XP OS. My idea is a dual boot system. Is there a hassle free way to do this? I know there are references around but I hope to get feedback from those with actual experience.

Why are you installing server 2003 on what appears to be a workstation? If you just want to learn about win2k3, set it up as a guest OS under XP using virtualization software.

Free, quick, simple.

Because you need VMWare workstation in order to create VMs it would be much less expensive (i.e. free) to just use Virtual PC 2007.

You can create VMs just fine in the free VMWare Server. And if you just want to use VMWare Player for some unknown reason, there are free 3rd party tools to create VMs too.

I will take your advise. Let me try VMWare and see how it goes. I will feedback later.

If you have never used VM type of software....virtual pc 2007 is WAY easier to get going than the the free VMware server.

I agree that the VMWare console may have a lot more "going on" in it, but I really think they are pretty equivalent in ease of use for a basic W2k3 guest OS. Both's wizards are very simple & straightforward.

I tried Virtual PC a while ago to try longhorn, it was so slow that the installation did not complete in several hours and finally I switched off the machine. I am not sure if Microsoft fixed/improved it later. Any day I prefer VMWare over virtual PC. That said, this post is mainly about another virtual machine software i.e, VitualBox, which is open source and is similar to VMWare.

I had the same problem installing 07 on Vista. It'd hang while installing the virtual network driver for some reason...and it killed my host's network connection. I eventually got it to work by turning off the PC (couldn't kill the install), using the MS installer cleanup utility to get rid of the VPC07 installer entries and reinstalling. Worked like a charm after that. Highly annoying though -- couldn't find much help on the problem.

Were you running beta copies of VPC07 or Vista? There were issues back in those days. Both retail products should work fine now.

Those were MSDN downloads and the exercise was work related. Longhorn might have been a pre-production version, but Virtual PC was their production release. In my current work place they use VMWare for all virtual machine purposes and everything works so well that operations team couldn't be happier! Now my stand is that unless Virtual PC is offering something more than VMWare there is no reason even to try it out again.

So to answer your question, no. Longhorn is still pre-release so nothing has changed. If you are waiting for a change to give Longhorn+VPC07 a try again, wait until release.
