Windows 2000 / Windows ME

I was just wondering if anyone takes any notice of the Microsoft Note on the back of their O/S Retail boxes showing:

HOME >>> Windows ME
BUSINESS >>> Windows 2000 Professional

I hear quite a few problems where people are trying to run Multimedia Devices on Windows 2K and are having problems.

Win 2K, very stable but slow and not for home users.

I am using Win2K as my only OS. I play a fair amount of games, and sound editing, and have had no problem so far. No wait, once I had a minute problem, thinking that Win2K had some support, if not extremely limited for DOS apps. It turns out, it is a wild guess as to which DOS app would work. Apart from that, I do everything multimedia on my Win2K OS that I used to do on ME.

Win2000 works fine (actually, great) for me in games. Why shouldn't I use it?
Of course, that is not true for every hardware setup, a friend of mine still isn't able to run most games in Win2k (including to his grief, CS) because OpenGL refuses to work correctly with his V3. Works fine with my Banshee ...

And MAN Win2000 is stable. It simply does not crash anymore! I still cannot believe it.

yeah, crashing has become a term i rarely hear these days.... usually reboot because of software installs.... I play q3/CS mainly.. no problems.. carmageddeon2k works great too. Deus Ex is the only thing I had slight problems with... long play led to memory problems... and crashes (one which unfortunately took out my entire system :|).

I have ME, my first retail OS!!

I suppose it does vary from system to system, I was told by a few people that ME had to have new drivers for all your hardware, I didn't update and everything still works okay so some warnings are unfounded.

It's just weird though, back in 98 would people have opted for Windows NT as a better Gaming Operating system than 95/98, Windows 2000 is designed to be the replacement for NT.

I tried to installed a 100% authentic (ahem) copy of Windows 2000 Pro onto my home systems, one of them kept crashing and the other came up with warning messages that three bits of hardware were not compatible.

If it works well, don't change it I suppose.

I get as good if not better gaming performance with Win 2K than with ME. With ME (& 98) I had problems running UT, with Win 2K none. I think DX8 helped Win 2k a great deal. I still have some odd problems, but nothing that keeps things from running.

When win2k first came out people did have some problems with certain multimedia hardwares (like scanners, webcam, etc). But since then, lots of manufacturers have came out with win2k drivers for their hardware, and I rarely see that problem anymore...

Of course, not all manufacturers spent their R&D money to develop drivers for win2k... so I suggest checking their websites to make sure if you are considering switching OS...

After Win ME is there just going to be Win 2000/NT releases??

Win 2000 is pretty awsome, but even some new games don't work with it. but on the whole I think it kicks ass.
